Saw my doc today and he gave me the go ahead to start on mushies and said I am progressing great! I lost so 12 pounds since the operation and a total of 25 since the pre op diet started. Not bad in 4 weeks if I do say so myself.

Well to say the least I was like a kid in a candy store and loaded up! LOL. Got some SF oatmeal, grits, SF choc pudding, a couple of the FF greek yogurts with fruit, and hubby is making some mashed tonight.

Over the past week I have had zero problem getting 4 shakes down a day to equal 60 gr of Protein and have been drinking Water with absolute ease. I just ate an oatmea and thought I was going to be like so many people on here and only have a few bites, but I was able to eat the whole thing. I feel absolutely full to the gills and litterally just burped as I am typing this (the indication for so many that you've had enough) .

Thoughts: I think I was overly excited to be able to have something to eat besides shakes and just kept eating. My tummy is tight right now and I don't think I am feeling so great right at this moment not to the point of being sick but just not comfortable. Like so many you live and learn by trial and error. I will say this, it is an interesting feeling to feel this full on so little. I do believe this is going to work out for me as long as I don't over do it and "listen" to my sleeve.

Consumed today so far:

2 Atkins low carb/low sugar Protein drinks

calories: 320

protein: 30

carbs: 4

sugar: 2

1 packet of low sugar maple and brown sugar instant oatmeal made with about a 1/2 cup of skim milk

calories: 165

protein: 8

carbs: 31

sugars: 10

Let me know your thoughts and insights on anything, I am open to any and all suggestions!

WOOT Raine, you're doing amazing! Have you tried the New whey Protein drink? I have some (thanks alot Lynn!) that I'll start drinking on Monday when I start my pre-op low carb diet. 2 a day and my Protein will exceed the requirements so that won't be too bad I guess. Protein / Water / sip / walk / poot...HEALTH! I think in that order lol

You go girl! Seriously I was a bit worried about your mushie day and crossing my fingers for you. Glad my super powers (finger crossing, everyone knows this is a super power!) worked for you. LOL

Certainly I of all people, struggling to drink and get any Protein here on day 4, know how hard it is to go through each stage. However, one thing I noticed was the high carbs in the oatmeal , and certainly in the mashed taters. Tasty as those things are my own dr. would lecture me severely because of the carbs. I have learned from all my research that those foods come third when we eat- Protein first, fruits and veggies, second, carbs third.

I have been kept on Clear liquids plus protein drinks for three weeks but when I get to have full liquids and mushies, I will add unflavored Protein powder to things like cream Soups, eggs, etc. I think adding 10-15 grams to your taters would have been a great thing to do!

However- I get it- you are just starting out- we are just trying to get ourselves down the road and without pain. I will not lecture you about any mistake you might make! In fact- I am so jealous!!!! ;-P

Do you have a magic bullet or blender? For pureeing? That would probably be great.

I am having trouble finding a Protein Drink I can tolerate and Atkins is one I will try- but I think 15 grams is pretty low. I try to get a lot more protein bang for my buck. The chocolate I found by Champion Nutrition Pro Score has 30 grams in 2 scoops - great bang for the buck!

Have fun ! Onward and downward! ;-P

Thanks guys.

Meggie I know, I know! LOL First day and was just testing how the consistancy and quantity would "flow" :)

I agree about the oatmeal, but I also thought to myself "self, nothing else has carbs in it" so I splurged. My total carbs that day was less than 40.

You dun good. I hope it's easy for me.

I might be the only person who's had this issue but I was actually chastised at my first post op appt. for doing low carb. Is it really only me? They said they don't like people to go low carb until they are completely through the healing window, that carbs play an important part in the body's mending, especially for the brain and the mental adjustment we are going through. They believe a lot of post op depression is fueled by too low of a carb intake. Truthfully, I had listened more to the on line info than what they were telling me and it didn't fly. Their point, and I get this, is that you are on such incredibly reduced caloric values that as long as you are getting typically getting enough Protein, the carbs can only do you good. I'm okay with their theory and am doing a much better job of tracking carbs along with everything else. But it really seems this program has a different track than most.

I know that I feel much better since I added more carbs back in 5 days ago. And that's really most important to me. I want this to be a healthy road.

Thanks 1-4, I agree at this stage the caloric intake is so low that we need some carbs for our energy and healing. I figure if I stay in the 40 to 60 range I'll be ok. Once I get to the actual food state (one more week!!!!) I will start watching things more closely and stringently. :)

Let me tell you, the first time I had refried Beans blended with a sprinkle of cheese and small dollop of Fage Greek yogurt, I cried it was so good. I also switched to using a baby spoon to eat my mushies to help 'pace' my intake. Oh, my favorite mushies so far are 1/2 an avocado, a squirt of lemon and some tuna; my refried beans with cheese and yogurt, and I made 'Shelly's Baked Ricotta http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/2007/08/pureed-foods.html , I could only have 2 oz, but it was amazing.

Good luck on the mushies and take your time.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

So proud of you Cat. Getting into those smaller size clothes is half the fun isn't it?. Keep up the good work!!!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
