How Do You Get In Everything

Recommended Posts

So I am three days post-op and at home. I know what the requirements are for Water and Protein. However, I am not even coming close. Today I had 1/4 cup SF Jello, 1/2 cup water, 1/3 SF popsicle, and about 2 oz. of Protein shake. I will have more water tonight, but there is no way I'm going to make the requirements.

Is this OK and will I be able to get more in as the days go by? I just have no appetite at all right now and I can only tolerate a tiny amount of something before I get sick of it. I had trouble keeping stuff down in the hospital, but that's not the issue anymore. I just don't want anything. (I shouldn't be complaining about that, should I?)

VERY normal...in the early stage, the focus is more on hydration than anything else. As your swelling goes down, you will tolerate things easier. Good luck and congrats!

Perfectly normal. I am 9 days out and I'm still not getting in everything I need to. I think I could only manage 1-2 cups of Water a day in the first days out, everything that I went to try hurt going down and I got a gas bubble. Now I still get a gas bubble but no more pain. But I'm still struggling to get everything in. 2 tablespoons of pureed food and I'm full!

It does get easier and better. You may want to try crushing some ice in a blender and just munching on that initially, it will soothe your throat and its Water :).I did that for like 3 days. I am on day 8 and I keep a little 12 oz bottle of Water with me all day long. I try to make it through at a minimum of 4 them daily. I wasnt able to do that until day 5 but I kept trying. In the first few days I don't think I got more than 10grams of Protein in, now I am up to 30 with my shakes. I have one for Breakfast instead of coffee, and it takes me about two hours to finish the whole thing and one around early evening. I am going to try and start doing one in the evening but not sure if I'll be able to get the whole thing down. Inbetween that I have SF ice pops and Jello. I have no appetite either, don't feel hunger what so ever, so I feel your pain there when for the first time in our lives, we are not hungry but we HAVE to eat/drink. Good Luck! It does get better and you will do great!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
