How do you keep carbs so low?

Recommended Posts

Seriously. How do you keep carbs under 30grams? I hit 60grams today without trying....I think my downfall was 8oz of black bean Soup that was 14 carbs LOL.

So do you count actual carbs or net carbs? Because that would make a huge difference.

It's all Protein, all the time. I count actual carbs. Yesterday's menu:

Breakfast: coffee & 4 oz scallops = 16 gm Protein, 2 carbs, 85 cal.

Lunch: 4 oz costco chicken salad = 12 gm protein, 12 carbs, 170 cal.

Snack: 1 slice turkey breast = 9 gms protein, 60 cal.

Dinner: 4 oz chicken thigh = 31 gm protein, 232 calories

liquid Calcium citrate = 10 carbs, 35 cal.

H2O = 64 oz.

Total 68 gms protein, 24 gms carbs, 582 cal.

Pretty much every day looks like that. I allow myself carbs in moderation a couple meals a week and usually have oatmeal or Lean Cuisine spaghetti with meat sauce. It's not difficult to do since my eye is on goal and then I will add in carbs to see what it will take to maintain.

A carb is a carb is a carb. I didn't have the time nor energy to deal with that net carb stuff. Others do it, and like it. I ate meat(beef, chicken, scallops, tilapia), cheese, eggs, and the bulk of my 30-40gr of carbs came from dairy (greek yogurt/cheese/green veggies). I do not do this whole "healthy/bad" carb during weight loss, but it's what worked for me. Admittedly, my menu was boring, and mundane, but I dropped 115lbs in 6.5 months, my labs were stellar and my cholesterol actually improved.

I think that is why they have the "PROTEIN FIRST" rule. If you are following that, you will not have room for carbs or very little carbs. Proteins have very little to zero carbs in them. Eat meat, fish, cheese and eggs. That will help you to feel full and you should not be able to eat so many carbs!

Good luck!

Kelly :D

It would help if you told us what you like to eat and we can tell you how to cut back on the carbs. A lot of people don't realize there are a lot of carbs in foods they think are healthy foods.

I do get most of my carbs from my Greek Yogurt. I like the kind with fruit already in it. If I really want to cut my carbs, I eat plain and add sf Syrup.< /p>

Right now I'm still on liquids, so my choices are limited.

Today I had

B- Protein shake 6 carbs 17grams Protein

S- Kefir 10 carbs 6grams protein

L- Black bean Soup (blenderized the heck out of it) 80calories 14 grams carb 4 grams protein coffee drink mix 10carbs 2 protein

S- Protein Shake 2 carbs 17grams protein

D - Have yet to drink it but will be the same as Breakfast 6 carbs 17 grams protein plus some Peanut Butter for a change 6 carbs 8 protein.

So that's a total of what 55 carbs? I could cut out the Kefir I suppose (it's essentially liquid yoghurt chock full of probiotics) And yeah eating a different soup or subbing a Protein Shake at lunch (blah)

I think it will be a lot easier once I'm on actual foods blink.gif

Ohhhhhhhhhhh I didn't realize you were so early out. Before I got to mushy/soft foods, I never counted anything. I needed every calorie/carb/everything to feel semi-human. Only once I could start eating foods did I bother with carb counting.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
