I actually do have a wheat allergy that I've had since I was a baby. I'm not so symptomatic as I was as a child, but every now and then it kicks my er...butt. I just think about never again biting into a juicy burger or something equally horrible for you and it makes me sad. Isn't that rediculous? I think maybe I would be one that would grieve for the loss of food if I'm being totally honest. Although I know that the sleeve is the way to go due to meds and like you've all said, don't really want anyone mucking about with my intestines AND I'll be on meds for the rest of my life because of the fibro, so if they ever find a cure, I don't want to shoot myself in the foot and not be able to take it. meh! I don't have time to add all the things that are going through my head right now, my best friend is coming down from Utah to pick me up so I can spend the night with her. WOOT! I'm still sticking to Atkins, so that's kinda sucky, but at least I'll get to see a friend.

Oh yeah, anyone wanna buy a bridge? It comes with land.... rofl

Ok so I feel confident and comfortable with my decision to go with Dr. Aceves, from all reports (or the vast majority) he's a brilliant and caring surgeon. I read read read, here and on OH and to be honest, I'm so dang scared! I am 99% sure I want the vsg, but then I read how the DS is so superior, but why would that be? I honestly wouldn't want to go through the dumping syndrome thing like some do or have diarrhea (I have ibs already! why would I wanna poo more?!) all the time or suffer from malnutrition or have my blood drawn every couple of months cause to be honest, I'm totally needle phobic. Yeah, I'm a sissy, stand in line to smack me! :P

I worry about the after-care here in the US to be honest. I'm totally trusting of Dr. Aceves, but I want to move in with him for a while during recovery, just to be sure I'm ok and he's close by LOL How many of you ended up in the E.R. after your surgery? A week, two weeks, even a month or two down the road. OR had to put in an urgent call to your surgeon? See, I wouldn't be able to do that because he'd be a 6 hour drive away. I'm sick and tired of being fat and I know that surgery is my last ditch effort to get healthy. Ok, brain knows this. My tummy is fighting back and saying not to throw it away, that it's never done anything wrong that maybe my brain should be removed, it's all it's fault. My brain of course is rolling its eyes and pointing the finger at my tummy.

I guess I'm just scared which is normal, but I totally don't want to be someone that thinks every little pain is VSG related and zooms over to the nearest E.R. (which could totally happen because I think maybe I'm a hypochondriac now LOL). On the other hand I don't want to be one of the ones that think it's not going to happen to me and so shut up and deal with agony and end up dead on the floor cause I got a leak or ruptured something and poo poo'ed it and didn't go to the hospital in time.

Was everyone else as bat-sh!t crazy as I am right now?! I don't wanna end up being dehydrated and in the hospital cause I can't sip sip sip, all I can do is guzzle guzzle guzzle HEAVE!

Mkay and now everyone knows how crazy I am

I would look for a non profit hospital that does WLS. The one in my area are willing to provide after care no matter where you had your surgery, even the support classes/exercise are open to anyone who has had WLS. I hope all goes well for you.

I've had Zero complications with the sleeve. I feel totally normal until I try to take an extra bite past full and I'm disciplined by my sleeve-even then when I put my fork down I feel OK pretty soon. I try very hard with the Protein and the Water and the Vitamins but at the end of the day I don't get them all in but I'm pleased that whatever I did get in, got absorbed.

I was scared about the surgery and recovery too but I just decided to "feel the fear and do it anyway" before I knew it-I was on the other side!

Have you been tested for Celiac or just gone on a gluten-free diet for a few days to see if it helps your bowel troubles? I can't even tell you how many people I know diagnosed with IBS have been totally symptom free since giving up gluten/wheat. It's really very easy to avoid and has totally changed my life! PM me if you want to know more.

As I was going through my weight loss pre-op testing, they found Celiac and while it's a scary diagnosis, I feel so much better gluten free... however its higher calories and carbs and so you have to be careful! I was switched to the sleeve because of my Celiac... which is what my doctor wanted in the first place but insurance would not cover it until the diagnosis!

wow...I'm glad they found it, Celiac can be dangerous! How did they discover / diagnose it? I've had IBS for years and have always wondered about celiac

Dr Aceves does everything he can to make sure you never have to go to another Dr or Hospital. If you follow his instructions I think you will be fine. If something does happen you can just go to the ER, they have to treat you. Don't even use the word Mexico, it can freak the poor US doctors out and give them penis envy. You will be fine!

ROFL @ penis envy!!! My son and I were walking through a parking lot the other day and this guy drove past us in a huge, jacked up 4 X 4, which seriously there is no need for here in Vegas, we get no snow. So I yelled to him "HEY! NICE TRUCK! SORRY ABOUT YOUR D!CK!" hrm...my son (he's 18, the youngest) punched me in the arm "mom! are you nuts?! you're gonna get me beat up for trying to save YOU when he comes back!" and i, rubbing my arm "well, he's compensating for something!"

Anyway, I totally wouldn't mention that I'd been to Mexico for surgery, even when I asked my Dr about it I thought I was going to have to give her cpr. She said "your next appointment is in july...if you live through mexico that is!". hmpf. I hate nay-sayers lol

What a ridiculous and unethical thing to say by an MD! This is a person who is supposed to be objective, empathetic, and reassuring to patients. It saddens me to know some people still think like your doctor. While in med school in the US I was taught by some impressively talented doctors. Once I came to Mexico, I met doctors equally trained and with the same abilities.

Next time reply: "If Mexico is so bad, why is the US healhtcare system thinking about outsourcing in Mexico?" To end on a light note, yesterday a potential patient from the US asked me if we sterilize the equipment after EVERY surgery...I thought it was a joke :D

Some labs test by testing the blood plasma for anti - Tissue Transgluaminase Antibodies that are present for persons who have celiac disease or other diseases. There are other tests but this is one of the primary tests.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
