UNEXPECTED SIDE EFFECT!?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved by Dr. Aceves one week ago (4-14-11) and have had a very smooth post-op course...no pain (except CO2 residual for 3 days), no nausea, no diarrhea. My daughter was basically the same when she was sleeved last summer. I have been out running some errands that last 2 days, and have then rested well. However, this evening I went grocery shopping with her and walking the aisles looking at all the food made me nauseous. Not enough to hurl, but uncomfortable. I will be starting full liquids on Saturday and stocked up on a few things I can add to my intake. I really hope this doesn't continue very long because I love to cook and am looking forward to trying some of the recipes on the forum. Just didn't expect that to happen...that's all!! :)

The first couple of weeks are the hardest. I had a hard time watching peope eat for a few weeks. Right now I can shop, cook, and eat with people but when I am done eating I have to excuse myself and walk away. I don't get sick or anything, I just have a hard time watching people after I am done. I think this wears off more and more the farther out you get.

Hang in there!

the smell of food post op really got to me, oddly enough. which kinda stunk cuz i had to feed my 9 year old. but it got better over the course of a few weeks. but i am with lara...i cant sit at the table. when i am full i HAVE to get up and leave. for a handful of reasons...i used to eat and eat even after i was full and i dont want to start that habit again. if i DO eat too much i get sick and i hate that. and so, to avoid it, i get up and do something else. It is getting easier, it just takes time to adjust to all these new habits we are making :)

Oh, and i LOVE to cook too, and i have more fun now, trying new recipes that are healtier. sparkpeople.com has a great query for different recipes for different diets. its awesome!! and delish!! ;)

I had the same reaction. Especially the first time I went to a restaurant post op. It will get better. I agree that I do prefer to leave the table when I am full because I just don't want to even think about food anymore. Congrats on your sleeve! :D

I was sleeved the Day after you by Dr. Aceves and had the same reaction this evening when I went into an Asian restaurant to get a bowl of wonton Soup to go. The smell and accompanying stomach churning was so bad I had to turn around and walk out without my soup!

We were there at the same time and didn't meet each other?? SHOOT!! I hope you found your experience there as great as mine. Oddly I watch the food Network all the time and have no problem, but that trip to the grocery was weird. Also, I started on full liquids today and had been so looking forward to it. All I added in was a container of baby food fruit (it was yummy) and I made whizzed up cheesy cauliflower soup. It was also delicious and my old brain said "I could eat the whole pot of soup", I took 3-4 sips and that was it. It still tasted good, I just didn't want any more. This will take getting used to. But that's a good thing, right?!?!?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
