I day out of the hospital. Please advise.

Recommended Posts

I came home from the hospital today. Had my procedure on Wednesday. Hospital food was Jello, broth and tea. Had no real difficulty with that BUT, today was my forst day on my own. I've had one 8 oz Unjury choclate shake, One can of chicken broth with a scoop of unflavored Protein and a yogurt with half a scoop of unflavored protein. Totaling 35 oz. of protein. I'm doing everything I can to keep this down. I can't even think of eating anything else. Is this normal for the first few days? Should I expect better as the week goes on? Please help. My wife is really concerned that i am not getting enough protein.

You are doing absolutely fine! I don't think I got anywhere near 35 grams of Protein in during the first week. It was a couple of months before I was able to get in the 60 grams (at the time) that they wanted me to. My surgeon told me that if I could get 35-40 I was doing great. Congratulations on the beginning of your new life!

Focus on clear fluids for this first week. It is very important to avoid dehydration which could land you in the Emergency Room. Protein will be much easier to add once you are on full liquids in a week or so, and then mushies. Remember, sip....sip... sip.

This is the sort of thing that drives me nuts. My place puts us on full liquids day 3. I hate that there is so much difference between programs. You'd really think there would be a consensus as to what generally works best by now. However, it's good to know that if I can only get a bit of the full liquids down in those early days it's not a big deal.

And, by the way, my place tells us to get 60 grams of Protein from the get. And if you try to pin them down on what an acceptable minimum would be they will not answer. They will only give the program's "standard" answer. It's annoying. You know there is a gray area.

Randy----sounds great to me. I'm getting a lot at just 7 days out. I think you're doing GREAT!

congrats on being sleeved. First of all concentrate on fluids first. You don't want to be back in the hosptial with a drip in.. second when you reach 64 ounces of Water per day then start gettting Protein in. It usually will happen in a week to a week and a half. Your body will not go into self eating phase until about a month. so as long as you get your protein before the end of you 1 month anniversary you will do fine. If you can you need to get your water intake and protein intake up before the one month. You will be alright just keep working really hard at reaching your goals. I will tell you that I didn't even start thinking about protein until the middle of the second week..

I didn't start worrying about Protein till week 2. I was then able to drink 2 "Premium Brand" (costco or Sams club) Protein drinks per day. Each had 30 grams of Protein = 60 grams per day....

I would take me between 1 1/2 to 2 hrs to get each one down. As far as Soup, I was only able to eat about 1 or 2 once's per sitting and I had to reheat it several time because it would get so cold.

First week home.... sounds like you may be trying to get to much down. Concentrate on liquid Protein shakes that are simple/lite and take your time sipping them. You will feel better in the long run.

I was sleeved on Tues & my doc said not to think about anything except staying hydrated for several days. Add in the broth and shakes as you tolerate them. You won't die from a Protein deficiency for a few days! :) Slow and steady wins the race!

I am 4 weeks out and still not getting anywhere near the protein I need. I am able to eat some things, but it is a struggle for me to find something that sounds appealing and that doesn't make me feel sick. I think I may be trying to move too quick, but I am doing what the doc says as best I can. I spoke to someone tonight who is 4 months out and she assures me it gets better with time. Just hang in there, but don't expect too much this early on. You have a few bad weeks ahead of you from what I gather.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
