When you get surgery in Mexico, is it hard to find aftercare in US?

Are doctor's leery about taking you on when they find out about your sleeve? I'm not going to Mexico but I'm thinking about what would happen if I move away from my surgeon. Would it be hard to find care elsewhere?

I had surgery in Mexico. Just saw my family doctor. He had no issues seeing me at all. Was very happy with my success.

I had my surgery in Mexico. I just see my regular family doctor. The aftercare for the sleeve is so much different from the aftercare of the band. You pretty much just need blood work to make sure your levels are in check. I think Dr Aceves suggested an Upper GI, but my family dr said that if i feel ok, then he wouldn't order one. I have a HUGE deductible, so maybe when I meet that I will ask for one to check things out!

Good luck,

Patti

If you have no insurance now, having the VSG makes you *uninsurable* for anywhere from six months to five years depending on the carrier. It makes no sense since you're actually about to get a lot healther, but whatever. You won't get aftercare unless you are already insured under something you had before you got the sleeve.

However, any dotor will treat you or see you -- you can't be refused care by any hospital and it'sdoubtful any doctor would refuse to see you. But -- yeah, in that case -- you pay out of pocket.

Rainydayz - I currently live in the north, but am a Native Texan. I went back to Dallas to have surgery, but went to my family doctor here in town ahead of town to let HER know what I had planned. I knew I was in good health, but I wanted to get her "ok" and just put my husband's mind at ease. Not only did I get her ok, since I am self pay and my surgeon is of course not an approved doctor since he is 'way down there' - my two doctors are kind of working together. He tells her what blood tests he needs ordered, she orders them and then faxes him the results. It's a win/win situation. I'm not sure if I could go to another bariatric surgeon and get aftercare.....probably not, but I am not 'banded' so there is no reason for me to see anyone else really. I see him on a fairly regular basis for the first 18 months, then once a yr. If/when he retires, well, I'll cross that bridge at that time! :D

OK, thanks for the info!

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
