Maybe I shouldn't have the surgery!!

Recommended Posts

Today is my 18th year wedding anniversary and once again I cheated.

I am weak as water!!! I have NOT been able to stick to my Pre-op diet very well. I have lost only 3 lbs and have 2 1/2 days until surgery! If I can't control myself now, how in the world am I going to be able to make the sleeve work for me and not try to cheat it?

I am so disappointed in myself. I DO NOT want to go through such an ordeal and not be able to stay focused and committed to the goal. Please tell me I'm not the only one that has done this!!

HELP! :o

Hello Lisa,

Well... I had a 2 week pre-op diet and you know what? I did pretty much stick to it really good. I'll tell you why. The reason you are put on a pre-op diet is so that the Doctors are in the hopes you will shrink your liver some. They have to work around it laporascopically and they want to minimize any accidents such as nicking or scraping it. That's a really big deal.

Also, it *never* hurts to be as prepared as you can be before you go under the knife. Good health usually gets good recoveries.

All that being said, what's done is done. Just try to, for the last few days stick to your plan 100%. Remember it's for your health immediately post op more than losing weight.

Good luck to you!

Since you are so close to your date, I would recommend going on an all liquid diet. The point of the pre-op diet is not to lose weight but to shrink the liver some and remove some of the fat from the outside. Just my thoughts

Lisa, my name is Lisa too and I am having my surgery the SAME DAY AS YOU with Dr. Nick in Plano! :) I cheated tonight too! This is so hard and I have questioned myself so many times! Maybe we can see each other at the hospital on Wed. :)

How funny!! Are you my alter-ego? :D

You're right! This IS so very hard...I have so little control when it comes to food. I told Dr. Nick that growing up being told to eat everything on your plate, there are starving people in China, coupled with my taste buds NEVER being satisfied has gotten me where I am today. If I didn't feel the need to eat everything in front of me and if I could burn off my taste buds...I would be good to go! But he says this should help.

I am extremely nervous...you? What time is your surgery? Mine is set for 2:30pm for now...but they said they would call the day before to let me know the exact time.

I understand what u are going thru! I was doing great until yesterday when I ate a grill chicken pita! I was on a 6 day roll then I gave in and I was really hard on myself today! I felt horrible about! But I jumped right back on the diet and my surgery is in just 2 days! I mean this is the reason we are having the surgery is because of the time we cannot control our actions in terms of food! I know we will get this right! GOODLUCK! and remember u are not alone!

Don't beat yourself up over it. It can be REALLY difficult to stick to a strict pre-op diet, especially w hen you (as many before you) have a history of eating problems. I mean that's why we're getting surgery. If we could lose the weight without it, I'm sure we'd all prefer to.

This isn't a class and you're not going to get graded on how well you stick to the pre-op diet. BUT, if you have any urges to cheat in the future, think about your liver and the surgeon who has to operate around it.

I have to wait 2 more weeks until my FIRST surgical consult and I"m already thinking about some kind of restricted diet until the actual surgery. My mantra will be "I have a liver to shrink!"

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
