9 Weeks Post Op - and the Blood Tests are in!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on December 6th, 2010 and am now 9 weeks out. I saw my regular physician last Monday - 8 weeks since surgery - to have bloodwork done and review my meds. I am diabetic. I was taking two types of insulin (3 injections per day - total of 70 units per day) and Metformin 1000 mg, 2 times a day. My blood sugar numbers were out of control - often over 200, never lower than 165. I also had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, with triglycerides off the chart, and hypothyroidism.

Good news! I'm off my blood pressure meds and down to 20 units of insulin at night. I'm taking meds for thyroid and gastritis. But the best thing is my bloodwork results.

On November 1st - my A1C was 8.7, cholesterol was 203, and triglycerides level was 253. On January 31st - my blood sugar was 100, A1C was 6.4, cholesterol was 153, and triglycerides level was 128!!!!

Granted - I'm in the early part of my journey so the amount of food intake was small but the food choices could be unlimited. The difference is that I am making better choices now because I have to. Having surgery was the best gift I've given myself. I know that there will be challenges the rest of my life. But right now, I couldn't be happier!

Isnt' that just the best feeling ever??? I was worried about my diabetes going into the surgery that it wouldn't help. Well, it did....I was off insulin after day 3. My fastings are 85-105. I can't wait to see my a1c next time!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
