should I go on a diet

Recommended Posts

Hello fellow slow loosers

I need some input guys.....

for the last 4 mos I have lost no more than 3lbs per month (the last 2 mos its only been 2). I just got on the scale for my midmonth weigh and I have gained a lb.

Now... I'm trying not to panic.... in the past this might have sent me over the edge.

I was 7lbs from goal.... now I'm 8.

I have to say... I am not much of a meat eater.... was pretty close to vegetarian before surgery. I decided to get back on the meat after surgery because lean Protein and veggies seems to really take the weight off.

If I eat another meal of meat and veggies I may PUKE!!!! I'm sooooo over it. he thought of it literally makes me gag a little.

Consequently I have added whole grains into my diet. I eat alot of legumes and such. Actually.... just this week I started eating bread!!!! (I'm sure that explains the lb)

What do you guys think about the idea of going on a DIET. I lost 50 lbs with weight watchers one time and I know the program well. It would allow me to eat more grains and yes.... even a little bread.... while keeping my calories under control. Its only 8 lbs..... I may be able to do it in 8-10 weeks. I would still drink the protein... just count it in my daily pts.

before surgery I was a bit of a compulsive dieter... the diet binge cycle. I certainly don't want to go back to that... but mybe if its not too restrictive and I have realistic goals.

I would love to have some input

thanks

stacey

You have done so well. First, congratulations! Have you been keeping track of what goes in your mouth, journaling or something? This seems to help me, and at times I stop doing it and lose consciousness of what I'm really eating. Weight watchers is good for that. Others here are using weight watchers meetings or the online program and getting good results. I am resistant to "going on a diet" too... Perhaps if you look at it as a three month intensive workshop or something like that, to just tweak your habits... you might not fall back on a diet cycle. Good luck with that... Im only 2 1/2 weeks out, so not much experience with the sleeve yet, but loads with dieting! I am a vegetarian too, and hope I can pull off enough low carb eating to make this sleeve/tool work well.

I think before I started a program, I would track my food intake for a couple a weeks. Just to really see what my nutritional intake was. You might be able to see some discrepancies by doing this and make adjustments on your own.

I might have to follow my own advice pretty soon, as I'm am losing very slowly as well. About a half a pound per week. Yes, better than nothing, but really not what I thought VSG would do for me.

I actually don't think you need to go on a diet. Your BMI is already smack in the middle of the healthy range. I would just focus on reshaping your body with resistance exercise and cardio.

I hear you blackberryjuice..... I'm just so darn close. I do alot of cardio and strength training but I still have a muffin top and batwings (made of fat, not so much skin).... I think I really need to start working on self acceptance etc... it seems like I am always chasing that pot of gold.

I really really really want to weigh 135.... its been a dream for years. I am just not quite ready to accept that it might not happen. Also.... I bought a whole wardrobe of size 6 pants. I can wear them (mostly) but they would hang oh so much nicer with just 7 lbs gone.

I think I might log my food intake for a week and then figure out the weight watchers points for everday at the end of the week.... just to see if i'm in the ball park.

thanks guys

oh.. feedyoureye

I forgot to say thanks for the kind workds in my last post. Its so easy to start seeing myself as a failure because I cant get off these last lbs instead of a success for how far I've come.

thanks for the reminder

Okay guys....

thanks for the input. Just the idea of counting points and measuring my food has made me want to buy a dozen donuts and a pizza (it might take me two days to eat but I could probably pull it off).

I guess that answers my question.... NO DIETS FOR ME....

I guesse I will continue to exercise and make good choices... maybe with a little more emphasis on Protein and cut out the bread... and let my body take me where it wants to go. I never want to be on the diet binge cycle again!!!

thanks for the input.

Hey Stacey,

I am glad you have decided not to do the diet thing, especially after such a great success so far... I agree with blackberry juice, your BMI is looking bloody amazing from here ... do you really need to lose more? Or would toning trim up the bits and bobs you are unhappy with?

I understand where you are coming from, my dream weight is similar to yours, but to be honest, if I was in a size 6 I wouldn't give a sh*t about how heavy I was...lol

Congrats on a job well done!!!!! =]

You are doing so great! I think tracking cals is a great idea. I track every single thing I put in my mouth on My Fitness Pal. Tracking calories makes me realize how I got so fat in the first place! I never used to measure and I was eating four or five servings at once. Now I measure everything. I am not super crazy about meat (I hate steak) and so I do eat about 60 or so carbs a day due to fruit and vegetables. I may lose a little slower, but I am losing so that's all that matters right? Good luck- you will get to that goal!!!

I'm almost 11 months out and my loss has slowed to a crawl, too. I'm hoping to lost 5 more pounds by my surgiversary on March 17, and my ultimate goal is to lose another 5 more after that. I'm not really dieting, but I have tracked every bite on www.fitday.com every since my surgery and it really helps keep me honest! If you don't want to do that, I'd advise cutting out the bread -- it slows my loss like crazy! Also, are you working with a trainer? A good one is expensive but you might find it's worth it. I started with a trainer at the end of August and I'm really happy with how my body is re-shaping itself! Just a few thoughts from somebody with almost identical numbers!!

Thanks MlkPas

I have kind of kept my eye on you because we do seem to be in a simmilar boat. You seem to handel it a little better than I do... you seem much more realistc and grounded.... sometimes I just get so frustrated.

I'm really working on self acceptance right now. I try to focus my thoughts in the mornings on how successful I've been rather than how I'm "not quite there". Its a challenge... I actually have to work pretty hard at it. It's definately the next step in my journey.

I can't really afford a trainer right now but I have added 30 minutes of cardio 1st thing in the morning and continue to lift weights (I'm not super hard core about this... just a little strenght training) and do yoga when I can pay for it. Your absolutly right about the bread though.... its the devil.

We will get there

thanks

stacey

Well and along comes me! I'm out now 13 months and my weight has come to a screeching halt! I on the otherhand have started a diet. . . i am following the 1000 calorie ADA meal plan. . . funny thing is though, this time it's so easy to follow! Yes, i get the head hunger (ALOT) but i'm sure i will over come that with time! I have come too far and spent way too much money to allow this to win. . I MUST win! WIN at all cost no matter what! I've also increased my walking on the treadmill to 45 minutes at level 3 interval hills at 3.1mph . . then i do 15 minutes of the eliptical stepper. . .ugh life is amazing. . . but like one of the quotes says "If you can't find time to exercise and get healthy now, be prepared to have time for illness later" . . .

I hear you..... we have come to far... put in too much time, money, and heart ache to throw in the towel. I think if I could go on a "diet" without triggering my binge cycle I would because it would be ever so much easier than before... I think 1000 calories a day would be ample given my current anatomy.

We will get there!!!!!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
