Don't be scared. Just make sure you have done enough research so that you are totally sold on the idea. The VSG is a wonderful tool. The men and women on here have had wonderful results after surgery. I just had mine this week, so I have made any progress yet, but really look forward to it. I can tell you the whole surgery process and the first few days afterwards have not been nearly as bad as I had myself worked up for it to be.

I was sore and could not really drink or get anything down the first 2 days after surgery, but now it is much better.

I personally wouldn't get a sleeve for a 25 lb loss. I know we all have our own decisions to make. Do you have high bp, high cholesterol, sleep apnea, diabetes, or any other conditions? If you don't have insurance, it's a very expensive process. that's just my personal opinion. I don't know if they'd even do a sleeve surgery on a BMI of 30.

With that said, my doctor thought I might try it on my own, too, and I had for years. Only to fail. I was 100 lbs overweight with high bp, hypothyroid, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and couldn't lose weight for anything. I was sleeved on January 5th and I'm down 17.5 lbs since surgery. I had full coverage insurance, so it was 100% paid. I don't regret a day that's gone by.

Andre,

I ahve heard nothing but good things about the sleeve. There aren't any negative side effects that I have heard from the sleeve procedure. I researched alot before I made my decision to proceed with the sleeve procedure. Good luck.

This is my opinion, because you did ask. I think this surgery is still new, and you are very young. If you were my lil sis I'd tell you, heh, you have a LOT of life to live yet. This surgery may be safe but it is also a very radical procedure. This surgery removes 85% of your stomach!! You can never go back and get that stomach if you need it anytime in the next 75 years or so. So if there is a problem with your tiny stomach, what will you do?

I would look at the sleeve plication before making a final decision. Because it is reversible and you get most of the same advantages (volume of food/drink restriction), and long-term if they discover any better procedures you should still be a candidate for most everything. Plication does not remove the stomach, it rolls it up and stitches it so you still have all the restriction you need. Once you eat less, some people say the hunger pains are minimal. I still have hunger with the sleeve, it varies.

I'm 47, so it feels a long way from 25. And my BMI was 40. When I was 25 they were doing stomach stapling I think, and you never hear of that now. A lot happens in 20 years in medicine, or even in 5 years. In fact, when I had the sleeve a year ago I hadn't heard of the sleeve plication.

Not all doctors do the sleeve plication because it is brand new. But maybe visit a doctor that does do this procedure and compare. It is a safer procedure than the sleeve bc they are not cutting the stomach. It is cheaper. And it is reversible, which I think is super important at your age. If it is not available in your area, why not wait a while for it or another procedure?

Also, don't be a guinea pig, there are just a few doctors that do the plication regularly, I'd find one of them.

If I have offended you, I apologize. I'm 5'1" so I understand how 150 lbs can seem like a lot. That is about what I weight now, after the sleeve though. Most people do not get the procedure to lose 45 lbs, especially not at 25 years or age. There was a time they would not do WLS if you did not need to lose 100 lbs. Perhaps we need to go back to that era when we are taking out virtually all of someone's tummy. I would think your doctor should have second thoughts about recommending it, you know? You are very young and not all that big.

Yes, while a sleeve may be just the ticket for you your BMI is only 30.3, very low by most standards and puts you just BARELY into the obese category. I honestly think I would try other alternatives like a good diet before I committed to the lifelong change of a VSG.

Just my opinion.

You sound like me! 100 lbs: yes. Less than 50 to lose, no! I cannot wait!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
