I am a little over a week post op and everything has been wonderful. Except yesterday, I ate lunch (sorta ate, i guess drink would be more appropriate haha), and had the worst pain in my shoulders ever. Kinda like maybe trapped air?? and its still there today. and last night, i was too scared to eat anything cuz it was so uncomfortable. I hate to call my dr over something silly so i was hoping maybe someone here has experienced this and can shed some light on things. i am gonna try some Protein Drink. I am just worried that maybe a leak popped up? or something worse. Any ideas?

I had the same pain so I filled my scripe for my ppi and after taking my ppi for two days the pain went away. So basiclly it's trapped gas trying to get out.

Hope this helps

I am 6 days out and my shoulder still hurts too. Mine isn't related to eating/drinking, it just hurts all the time. Getting better each day, though.

It is gas but not from eating. The surgeons inflate your torso with CO2 to help them see better and get around easier inside while operating. For whatever reason, it takes about a week for the CO2 gas to dissipate and leave your body. It typically travels up your left side and your left shoulder will hurt more that your right. It takes about 2 days for the pain to subside or all the gas to exit your system.

Anyway, based on the type of pain and the timing, this would be my guess. If the pain doesn't go away soon, then I would maybe call your dr. I hope this helps. Take liquid tylenol or a pain pill to get past it.

Took 2 weeks for that shoulder pain to go away and I was so glad to get off the hydrocodone. They put air in your abdomen to have room to manipulate their instruments, etc. It gets trapped around the diaphragm and there is a nerve there that goes to the shoulder that is effected. It i horribly painful but does go away.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
