Hello, I'm new around here, but it has been really exciting reading all the posts so, I decided to join! I hope the "general forum" is okay to post this...

Just a little background info:

I've tried various diets/exercise plans and have lost some but never maintained it, so it just all came back. The most intense thing I have done was take phentermine, and I just don't like how that makes me feel when I am on it, and I could never keep the weight off.

My sister had the VSG this April (2010) and has been doing incredibly well. Because she has done so well, I have decided to pursue having a weight loss surgery. I am ready for this life changing procedure, I just have to start my journey.

I have an appointment early in Jan 2011 with my PCP and I have registered for two weight loss surgery seminars. I almost have my mind made up so I want to get the ball rolling because i know it is a long process. I also have in mind the whole insurance restriction/denial/approval stuff.

You all seem very knowledgable and so my first question is:

Do you know of any thing I can do now, to help with skin elasticity? I know the inevitable is that I will have loose skin and so I would like to know if anyone has read up or heard of things you can take/do to help with this.

Thank you!

Welcome and congrats on your decision. WRT skin elasticity the consensus on the forum seems to be that the skin will do what this skin will do regardless of what you do (eg lose weight fast/slowly, etc).

Welcome smj!! Continue reading up here and posting, you will find so much help - you probably won't have enough time to get through all the posts! :)

It is true, the skin will do what it wants. However to "help" you can keep up with the toning of your muscles. It does help some - and time will help too. Over time your skin can shrink back even if a little bit.

Patience will be your very best friend with this surgery!! We will be second on the list. ;)

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
