I've always read that if a patient has reflux before VSG, it's typically worse in the first couple of weeks after surgery only because the stomach doesn't realize it doesn't need to make as much acid as it did with the big stomach.

Call your surgeon and see if you can take some Gaviscon to help with breakthrough reflux until you can get your pills down more easily. You may have to increase your PPI dosage.

Make sure you aren't eating anything 2-3 hours before laying down as this will make it worse.

Hmmm...and me an RN and I didn't even think about that..LOL...well it's a new life with new challenges and sis is the Gaviscon as the MD said..OH yes..but of course you will need extra help...so this should be added to the many directions and post op things to possible expect..and have learned many years ago to always to go bed on an empty stomach...My thanks for such a quick response. Happy Holidays..Oh yes..am learning to warm y fluids..could never drink cold things and still can't..so warm helps and Protein shakes cautiously warmed do not break down..warm never hot..but dang if warm diluted juice is just plain wieird!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
