Could I drink too many calories during full liquid?

Recommended Posts

Dear all:

Today is my first day of full liquids, after 1 1/2 days of post-op IV fast and 3 days of Clear Liquids. So, in earlier days I was drinking as much as I wanted, but today, I've been trying to limit the "food drinks" i.e creamy Soups and Protein drinks to "meal times" I guess the concern that I have is that if I was just sipping my Protein Drink that I could end up with 2000 calories in a day. I had 1 cup of semi creamy Soup twice today (so about 400 calories) and I just finished a relatively big Protein drink (in about 10 minutes, which seems fast, but my dad is nagging me to help him so I gulped it down.....now I'm feeling bloated).

I guess that in some ways I'm answering my own question....as the food gets thicker, it doesn't transit as fast, and so it shuts me down. But I could see how you could beat the sleeve with a lot of mocha lattes or whatever.

But, I'm worried that my transit is so fast that I won't get the full effect.

Yeah, you could definitely "beat" the sleeve if you really wanted to. My surgeon, during his pre-op "this is a tool and it's up to you to use it right" speech to us, said that he had a pt who lost all her excess weight, then like a year later, suddenly started packing on the pounds at an alarming rate. They went over her diet, and she was drinking 3 frappuccinos a day! These things are like 800 cals each! So take 3 of those, add the solid food she'd be eating on top, and couple it with a sedentary lifestyle, and packing on 2-3 pounds a week doesn't sound that unrealistic anymore.

P.S. I love your avatar...haha.

whe was your surgery? Mine was this past Wed and I am still sipping on drinks, I cannot drink as much as you. Maybe its that I am too scared, but a couple of times I had a really uncomfortable feeling when I drank alot in one gulp. I am worried i am not getting enough Protein in because of the little sips, how much protein are you drinking?

I can take full sips. Probably 1/2 an ounce per sip. I realize that it's a lot, so I'm worried a bit. It really not that the sips are so large, but the wait time between doesn't need to be that much. I can finish a 6 oz of clear liquid in 10 minutes. I was told by the doc that I could do 1 ounce per 5 mins rather than the typical 1 ounce per 10 minutes because my swallow test showed a really fast transit time.

WOW, that just seems like so much to me! LOL My swallow test was SUPER SUPER SLOW (slowest my doc has seen :( ) so I'm on pretty tiny sips!!!

So clear liquid transits fast, but anything with heft and I'm slown down, down for the count after tiny portions. Just two ounces of greek yogurt in about 20 minutes, and there was NO WAY more was going in. I also HATE sugar now...but I want to lick the chex mix...go figure. I still did less than 700 calories today, and I'm quite full.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
