Hi folks,

I am a newbie here, and I've been looking into VSG for a while, and thinking it's likely the right solution for me. My surgeon's program requires you to eat between 500 and 800 calories a day, and I am just fearful that I will be tired on such low calories. Right now, even though I weigh about 300 lbs, my energy isn't too bad, and I just want some assurance that I won't feel terrible after surgery. When I read VSG blogs and this forum I haven't seen much commentary on this. I am wondering if anyone can tell me more about their energy levels during the weight loss phase and if you experienced any difficulty with mood or energy. I don't expect to feel good right after the surgery, but what about the months after that?

thanks!!!

I was only really weak during the first month, when I could eat very little and most of it was liquids. I'm 2.5 months out and have just as much energy as I did before - that is, when I wasn't 200+. I definitely have MORE energy than when I was 200+ and was eating a ton! To give you an idea, my boyfriend and I go to bootcamp 3 days a week and once a week I have 3 hours of dance classes in a row. We also often do something active on the weekend - today we hit the weights and I also ran/walked for 30 minutes. Then we went shopping after, which can also be tiring. Full disclosure - I don't eat 500 calories, I'm more in the 1000-1200 range (doesn't seem to affect my weightloss rate).

The first 2 weeks were super tough for me. I could barely take a shower and dress. I'm 8 weeks out and I'm up and down as far as energy goes. Really tired today :(. I know it's because I don't the calories in like I should. It's difficult for me to eat when I'm just not hungry. This is what I'm working on at the moment lol.

Thanks for responding! so, if you make sure to get your calories, you are generally OK?

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
