Preparing for surgery-what is needed

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, so I am going to have my surgery on November 19th and I want to make sure I am prepared. I need ideas and suggestions on what to take with me to the hospital for before and after the surgery. Also, if anyone flew after their surgery I could use some ideas on staying comfortable during the flight.

Hi...

Flying there is no problem....however...don't over pack....for the most part while you are in the hospital you will be in a hospital gown..So take slippers or flip flops to walk around. Take some personal care stuff (travel sized Shampoo, face cream, chapstick*****very useful***).....I took my laptop, my headphones with microphone so I could SKYPE home and make calls, if you are going to Mexico, you may think about taking a few DVD's so you can watch a few movies you like or some series you like...Mexican cable has a few English stations, but at least my hospital there were only a few, and it seemed like they were an an eternal Law and order or CSI cycle.

For the trip home...pack a few tea bags, and ether some chicken broth bullion squares, or the powder from Ramen Noodles....you can ask for hot Water on the plane and the broth always feels good, you can get something to drink at the airport like FUZE or even gatorade.....get an aisle seat so you can get up and walk with ease, and go to the bathroom, also if you are of any size, don't be scared or embarassed to ask for a seatbelt extender....you don't want to get too tight on your brand new incisions, your tummy will be bloated/swollen....if you have to change gates and have a lay over, ask for a wheelchair or transport form one gate to the other....if takes the stress away from running to the gate...and again...don't over pack...you can probably wear the same thing you wore getting there, back home.....

One of the doctors assisting in my surgery wrote "Weight Loss Surgeries for Dummies" I ordered my copy and receiveid it yesterday. It's very comprehensive, including hospital stay and what to expect after. I'm taking that with me tomorrow.

My best friend(s) after surgery were a little travel pillow for the car and airplane, a soft, flat pillow to lay under my tummy so i could lay on my side when sleeping and a heating pad, it felt so good on my incisions when I was awake during the day. The heating pad was better than pain meds, which after leaving the hospital, I only took before bedtime...and only took the first week! Good luck!!!

I just ordered the book. Didn't know it existed. Thanks for the info.

You will probably want to take some gas x strips and some chap stick, and some biotene for dry mouth.

That is what I am taking anyways.

I am also taking broth cubes the top romin thing is a great idea, im also taking my heating pad and some chewable vitamins, and some crystal light pacs too.

Good luck, let us know how things go!

Thanks for the ideas NtvTxn. I am getting a little travel pillow for sure for the flight back to Houston. I am making a list of things to take with me and I appreciate the help.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
