Hernia Repair

Recommended Posts

Did anyone else have to get a hernia repaired at the same time of their sleeve? I'm wondering if you're feeling the same way I am....like crap. I'm thankful that I'm not in pain, but this reflux is like nothing I've ever felt before. It keeps me up/wakes me up at night, and prevents me from eating. I had two crackers today. Sigh.

Do you have any suggestions for relief? I started with Pepcid complete (doesn't work), then I started taking Gaviscon, which worked the first night but now it's not so much working anymore. I called my surgeon and he basically told me he could give me a script for a PPI, but that it might not take care of the issue. Then he went on about swelling and that being the reason why the reflux is currently so bad but eventually it'll pass. Which I don't doubt but I just need to know how to handle it now.

I did have a hernia repaired at the same time as my VSG. I have always had issues with reflux, and it got much worse after surgery. I didn't go to my dr as soon as I should have about it and ended up vomiting blood due to an ulcer in my esophagus. It was very painful and I ended up back in the hospital. Don't let it go. Get in touch with your surgeon. Mine put me on Nexium twice a day and it's really helping. Best of luck.

I had a hiatal hernia repaired during my sleeve surgery too. I had no idea that it was there, but my doctor said that it was really large. Looking back, I guess I could have noticed some of the signs, but maybe I had been living with it too long.

I left the hospital with a prescription for omeprazole, (Prilosec) and I've felt okay. Maybe it wouldn't be too bad of an idea to just have him give it to you to see how you do with it.

Oh my! Okay, tomorrow I'm making him give me one because that does not sound fun in the least.

Glad you're feeling better though!

My doctor (I haven't had the surgery yet but plan on beginning of Dec) makes all his sleeve and bypass patient take nexium for 6 months. He says patients who fail to take the Nexium may experience nausea, reflux and swelling which may lead to difficulty in eating. He also said that if you are a smoker you may have to take it longer so I definitely recommend getting on some sort of PPI. HOpe you feel better soon

My doctor finally gave me a prescription!! Thank you baby Jesus! I got a prescription for Protonix and I started taking it tonight so (obviously) I don't know how it works yet, but fingers crossed.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
