when did you have your first BM after surgery? My surgery was monday and I have not gone poop since Monday morning before surgery. I asked Dr Aceves, of course, and he said it was normal so long as I was farting, which I am occasionally doing. The gas is mostly exiting from my mouth, however.

I know. Gross. But I am getting concerned.

I had surgery on a Monday, as well, and my first BM was Friday morning. Stay put, lol.

P.S. Word of warning - while my first BM was mostly solid (remnants of my "last supper" pre-surgery), several of the subsequent ones were VERY liquid and VERY sudden. We're talking, I was glad I live in a small apartment and not a 2-story house...

I was told the more you walk the more your guts move around and work in the hospital and if you don't do what you're supposed to you could damage or kill part of your intestine. I don't know if that's true but I didn't question it and walked. That being said I know anesthesia slows everything down and any opiate pain meds they might have given you will also slow you down poo wise. I had surgery on 08/26 and today was the first time I got the ball going.

Started passing flatus a couple of days after, then was worried about not having a BM (I am a regular as rain morning girl- get up, drink a glass of Water, go do the deed). I had a GREAT sushi dinner the night before surgery (low fat!) and was concerned about where it was!

Your intestines are not going to die, don't worry! A lot of surgical patients have a very sluggish GI tract after anesthesia- takes a while for it to all wake up. Walking definately helps.

"Bottom" line, I had a really normal BM about 1 week after surgery. I recommend taking Colace (comes in a liquid form- your doc should prescribe it) as a stool softener, and as soon as you can tolerate it, SPLIT PEA SOUP! You'll be right as rain! :thumbup1:

Good luck!

It took a few days, then seemed to stop up again a week or two out--Miralax ( or the generic walgreens version of it) really helped. SInce it mixes in liquid and does not have a taste it was easy to get down with crystal light.

Hi Shrinking girl, glad to see your on here. Hope everything went great with you and your friend was back there to pick you up. I am very regular with BMs but I didnt go after surgery on Saturday until late Monday after noon before leaving on Tuesday and it was very firm. After that it was liquid in, liquid out basically. At the airport on Tues. I went so many times and have continued to do so at home. Hope everything works out good for you.

Hey shrinkinggrl!

My first full day home (Tuesday) I had "the runs" terribly....they lasted until Wednesday afternoon and then I took a chewable Imodium...haven't gone since and am thankful because I could use a break!

Well, mine was the opposite problem. As soon as I drank the contrast material for the fluoroscopy, I had about 2 hours and then literally all hell broke loose. I didn't stop the diahrrea until 2 days ago...on my 21st post op day. Nothing yesterday or today so far, but I figure it will happen when it happens. I am just so glad I can get in the pool and not have to worry about making a mad dash into the house. The upside: I am down 21 lbs in 23 days!!! Go sleeve!

Do you like Miso Soup? Buy some instant, strain out the chunks and add a scoop of Protein Powder. I also went to Chinese restaurants and bought their egg drop soup and won ton soup (minus the chunks) Just be sure to chew the drops of egg really really well. I know, the clears pretty much suck monkey warts. You can also eat Jello and sugar free popsicles.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
