Really?? 15 minutes between bites?

Recommended Posts

Good day everyone. I attended a bariatric support meeting this week and the subject of eating after surgery. Many of the bypass patients talked about taking 15 minutes between bites.:lol0: I was curious if this is the same for sleevers? I understand the amount of food we eat will be extremely small, but is it going to take me an hour to eat 4 bites of food?:thumbup1: The post bypass patients took great pleasure in putting this information out there. :001_tt2:The enjoyed the look of horror on the pre-op patients....pretty sinister..lol

I am 7 weeks with VSG, and basically, the rule is to chew, chew, chew, and then chew some more, and while doing so, put your fork down...eat at a "slow" pace, enjoy the tast of your food, and when you feel ready, have another bite. I'm about 2 minutes or less, depending on what I'm eating, between bites.

Speed is different for everyone..

no way, i've never heard that. they do say to put down your fork and take your time and chew well, but 15 mins is absurd. I'm 3 months post op today and i have no problems. Just take your time until you know how much your tummy can take and try new foods slowly to make sure they are agreeing with you. You will do fine the sleeve is a very different animal than the bypass. Much easier to deal with imho, good luck jeani

I try to slow down , but I eat at pretty much normal speed--but I get full real fast. I'm working at trying to stretch out my eating to a half hour per meal like I was told, but for me it's more like 10-15 minutes depending on how dense/heavy the food is. They said to put your fork down after every bite. I've been trying to do that.

The reason they tell you to eat slow is so you don't overfill your pouch before you realize what you've done. I had 2 bad incidents where I learned to slow down the hard way. Now I've learned how much time I need to give myself for portion size/density.

No one ever told me to wait 15 minutes between bites--they did say try to pace the meal so it took a half hour to eat.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
