Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!

I am having surgery on Friday in Tijuana with Dr. Corvala. I am very very scared!! I am worried about the pain after as I have heard that they only give you like tramadol which isn't very strong at all and I am worri:scared0:ed about the staples after. Who will take them out? I am leaving on Friday early..having surgery on Friday afternoon and am scheduled to fly out on Sunday morning..does anyone forsee a problem with this for me?

Any info greatly appreciated..

P.S.

I have already noticed something..when I email them they take forever to respond.

Hi Libra,

Honestly, for me the pain associated with the surgery was really minimal. They gave me tramadol, but I think I only used it once. I wouldn't worry too much about that. Most of the doctors use surgical glue now, not staples. Check with your surgeon, I wouldn't be surprised if they use the glue, and it dissolves on its own.

I flew from Florida to Mexicali for my surgery. I went back home two days after the surgery and had no problems there either. I had prepared by making sure I had loose, comfortable clothes for the flight and a pillow for my tummy. They also sent me home with some broth, and the flight attendants were kind enough to heat it up for me on the flight.

Good luck, I am sure everything will go fine.

I think you need to find out if you are getting Plication or Gastric Sleeve. There are no staples with Plication only sutures.

I am getting the plication..I guess I should have clarified sorry. I meant the staples on the outside incisions.

Thanks:thumbup:

Hey my surgery is not until December, and I have the same fears. I keep wondering is the pain worse then child birth? Will I be able to tolerate it or will I be a big baby. I'm also having to drive 7 hours to have my surgery, and the question about what do I do if I get home, and have a leak, do I go to the ER here at my hospital, or drive to the VA, what if I don't know if I have a leak??? Trust me I am right there with you with all the thoughts running through my mind, and I have a few months before the surgery. lol I will probably be a nervous wreck the closer I get. lol but I know this is the best thing for me.

I wish my sugery was sooner! Mine is scheduled for Oct 13th. You'll be able to find AWESOME info and how well others are doing if you just do a search for PLICATION in the search box and read all the thread. It is SO fabulous that this surgery has made available to us now! None of the other ones felt right with me, but this I am 100% on board!

Pain for me was very minimal. I had a rough first night, but it was more like severe indigestion. The nurses were great, they gave me a pain medication in my IV and another one in my arm, they also gave me a sleeping pill (crushed and under tongue). I actually slept for about 6 hours, no problem, they woke me up to go do the swallow test. After the swallow test I had a little pain, but I started walking. Taking a shower made me feel like new, but that afternoon I was walking and chatting with my neighbors. It wasn't bad at all. The hospital, Dr. and staff are great...... It has been easy for me. I am back to eating normal food, just a ton less....I'm saving a load of money in groceries LOL!

Hi Lisa. I didn't have very much pain at all. In fact, I didn't even take any pain pills. I had my surgery in Cincinnati and drove seven hours home the next day. I slept most of the way and had no problems. If you are getting the plication, you shouldn't have to worry about a leak.

Hello Everyone!!

I arrived at Hospital Angeles yesterday around eleven and from that time everything went very swift. Labs, x rays.. upstairs to your room, EKG, psychologist comes in and the right into surgery. There are some language barriers with the nurses but... they can understand a few words and you have the number of the patient coordinator if there is something you need and they cant understand.

I woke up from surgery and I didn't feel anything until I got back to my room and started feeling the gas...yes its hurts a little but nothing terrible. For instance, If you have ever had a bladder infection..it reminded me of that. I had a little trouble sleeping because of the gas making me uncomfortable but otherwise everything was pretty easy and fast!

Thanks..will post again soon,

Kerste

Joanie, Thanks that is comforting. To be honest I do not know exactly if I'm getting the plication or not they just tole me Gastric Sleeve. My surgery is on a Thursday and they are keeping me in the hospital until Monday, because I live so far away. I hope they actually let me leave the hospital because if they keep me inside the whole time, I think I will go crazy. Well at least there is a mental hospital right there in the same building. lol

Hello again...

it is Sunday night and I am home from Tijuana..feel pretty good but kind of have the chills. My temperature was taken before I left the hospital and it was normal but I still feel like I slightly have the chills..wonder if it could be from anthesia?

Thanks,

I'm glad you got home ok. You just may be tired out from travel and surgery. Have you taken your temperature? If you have a fever, call the Dr. in the morning or as soon as you get a hold of someone. If it is just chills, and no fever, try some herbal tea and crawl into bed. Take your pain med even if you don't have pain, and your Nexium and get some rest. I hope it's just tired from travel. Keep us posted. Get better soon....

Hi...thank you for answering me so soon..at least I dont feel so alone! I dont have a fever..just a littled chilled. Otherwise, I feel absolutely wonderful!! I have decided to make an appointment with my [primary care provider just to give her the 411 on the surgery..give her all of the info that I recieved so they understand from this point on that my body has changed. I am kind of nervous about that...I live in hickville not sure how accepting they will be about me flying to Mexico for surgery but oh well...lol..they really dont wanna mess with me hehe..

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
