VSG and IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)?

Recommended Posts

Hi Dr Jossart,

I have been asked by a friend whether or not suffering from IBS would preclude her from VSG surgery? If not, what should she do, over and above what the rest of us had to do, post surgery to recover successfully? I have not got this problem so I cannot help her. Please could you give some advice here?

I have IBS and decided to not give that info to my surgeon. My PCP has it on his records, but somehow it was not brought up. I was just worried that it might keep me from getting the surgery, and knew from the years past what to do if I start having problems with it.

Sometimes, I think my Constipation would not have been as bad after the surgery if I didn't have IBS...but now I take flax oil capsules every day, and don't have any problems. I can't get 25 grams of Fiber down a day...I'm 4 1/2 months out...but my Protein powder has 5 grams of Fiber in it...and I drink 2 a day. My veggie intake is practically nill right now. Raw veggies still make my stomach hurt.

Your friend has to decide whether to tell or not....I just didn't want it to interfere with my acceptance with the insurance.

I am confused, I sent in an email to a few folks about IBS and VBG. Then I get this email from Jane saying she has a friend who would like to know about the issues with this condition. Then Jane write to a Dr. and gets a wonderful answer. YEAH. However this site works it is cool.

Blessing, Staple Me Thin,

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
