Questions to ask a surgeon

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I will be having a consultation with a surgeon this week... I am a hot mess of emotions... from nervous, excited, fear, and hope. I hope that these are normal feelings. Anyway, I recently joined this site and viewing different threads. I am currently trying to generate a list of questions what i want to ask the surgeon but I seem to be having writer's block... were there any questions you felt like were really good questions to ask? Any feedback is welcome and I appreciate your replies. Thanks! :crying:

i posted a similar thread and got no responses to it... so i'm determined to not leave you hanging on this! some things i wanted to know were:

how many of this particular procedure has he/she done?

what is the complication rate and what specific complications have they seen?

how many deaths have they had as a practice and also for the individual surgeon?

when can you get to a gym afterward?

a list of things to get that you'll need after surgery, i.e. Vitamins, Protein shakes, etc.

if i think of any more i'll get back to you.

oh... almost forgot... for me pregnancy is a big issue since that's sort of what caused me to finally make the decision to have surgery. if you ever want to have kids, you might ask how the smaller stomach will affect the surgery. and do they have anyone who might be open to you emailing them and asking them about their specific experience with the surgeon or the whole experience in general.

This information came from user TIffykins

Here's some questions to ask your surgeon:

1) How many sleeves have you performed?

2) How many leaks, major complications, deaths (with all bariatric surgeries)?

3) Leak stats, most surgeons should have less than or equal to 1%.

4)What size bougie do you use?

5) What type of aftercare do you offer?

Labs pulled when? How many follow up appointments can you expect?

6)Will you have access to a nutritionist?

7) Does he have any patients that have provided testimonials that you could read or contact them for personal experience?

8) How many nights in the hospital?

9) How many leak tests?

Hope this helps.. good luck

Sherri

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
