Anyone have surgery with sleep apnea?!?!?!?!?!

Recommended Posts

Hello, my father and I are having our surgery same day in Freehold, NJ on September 3rd. He is getting nervous cuz our surgeon just left a message for him and wanted to speak to him regarding his pulmonary letter. His heart and lungs are all fine. Everything came back good, except the fact that he has sleep apnea. What do you think the doctor wants to tlak to him about? Is sleep apnea dangerous to have when going under anesthesia? Someone please help us out! He is so nervous to begin with and I hope the doctor doesn't make it worst with telling him the apnea is going to make is surgery more risky. Anyone go through this or have it done with sleep apnea? Please help!

I have sleep apnea and had the surgery. He probably wants to tell him to be sure to bring his cpap machine with him. I was tubed so no worries about breathing during the surgery

I've seen several people post who had sleep apnea and got the surgery. Actually I think I had a mild undiagnosed apnea because they had me hooked up to the breathing monitor post-surgery and every time I feel asleep it started beeping. I hardly got any sleep my night in the hospital because of that.

Like a previous poster said, I had undiagnosed sleep apnea at the time of my operation. I could only sleep sitting up so they adjusted my hospital bed to that position. The good news is that my sleep apnea cleared up rather quickly and I can now sleep in a bed. I am told that I rarely snore even.

During the surgery, the breathing will be done for you through intubation-nothing to worry about.

Good luck to both of you!

I was diagnosed with sleep apnea before my surgery (lapband) while every hospital and surgeon is different I will give you my info. They will want you to bring your CPAP with you. The surgery actually has nothing to do with sleep apnea, it is the aftercare. Once out of surgery I was taken to a "high-risk" ward and my heart was continuously monitored (not necessary if you dont have sleep apnea) with leads etc. It is a precaution, there is nothing to worry about, you will be ok, it is more of a way to monitor you post op......

sleep apnea and obesity go hand in hand. I had to bring my CPAP to the hospital and the anesthesiologist asked me my pressure setting and set up the oxygen mask to the same pressure during my surgery. It didn't make my surgery more risky, just one more thing for the medical team to be aware of so it can be accounted for properly.

Bariatric surgeons are very familiar with sleep apnea since many of their patients have it. It won't mess up your surgery -- in fact, it's one of the many compelling reasons to have WLS. Sleep apnea is very damaging to your health if untreated, and quite a hassle to manage even if you're treating it with CPAP therapy. I'm sure the surgeon just wants to clarify stuff or find out if the sleep apnea is a recent diagnosis or an ongoing thing so he knows the history. No reason to be nervous.

Dr. Prokurat & Dr. Noyan @ CentraState Hospital. Were you able to bring your own cpap machine? I know my dad can't use the machine because he can't breathe through his nose, but now they have an oral cpap machine. Maybe that would work better.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
