I found out I was turned down by Kaiser

Recommended Posts

I just found out I was turned down by Kaiser. They said I do not qualify.

My BMI is 37.5 and I have HP which I have been on 2 meds aday for years. I also have high cholesterol and triglycerides, I guess my numbers are just not high enough. I am really disapointed.Has anyone fought Kasier on this and won?

That is TERRIBLE NEWS:thumbdown:!!!! I didn't qualify based on my BMI either through my primary doctor. It was only after my orthopedic surgeon put the referral in that my primary doctor signed off on it and the process began.

What a bummer! Do you have to have one or two co-morbidities if your BMI is 35-39? I don't remember. I thought that hypertension counted, but I haven't seen anything about high cholesterol. I could see that one as being iffy since obesity doesn't always mean high cholesterol and vice versa. Have you ever been tested for sleep apnea? I know that seems to be another of the big co-morbidities for consideration. You might not think you have some sleep/breathing issues, but you just don't know. If you had asked me a few weeks ago if I did, I would have said no way!! But, my husband has told me that I snore a lot. He never told me that before! It was usually if I was really tired or sick. Snoring doesn't mean you have sleep apnea, but it also doesn't mean you don't. If I wasn't considering this surgery, I would go ahead and have myself tested just to be sure. However, my BMI is over 40, so I qualify already, and I don't really have any comorbidities. Good BP, decent cholesterol, no major weight-related health conditions - a fairly healthy morbidly obese person.

While I don't know how to go about appealing, I do think you might want to talk with your PCP about being tested for sleep apnea. Are there any other weight related issues that you have? Do you see a specialist for any other conditions that weight loss would help improve?

Don't give up hope!

What about joint pain? Disc disease in your back? Anything like that? Does your state have an insurance commission you could contact and find out what your rights are? Good luck.

I have one knee that has has been bugging me, I did tell my Dr on my last visit. Maybe I can start complaining more about that. My blood sugar has been around 100 the last few times maybe I should eat a few jelly Beans

before they take blood next time lol.

I even thought about putting some weights in my pockets to raise my BMI... I will just keep at it and see what happens.

Now that's creative and a "healthy" way to raise your BMI! :001_smile:

My husband works for the department of insurance for the state of CA. He suggests you write to the department of managed health care. They regulate Kaiser.

Did they give you an exact reason why they turned you down? If so, maybe you can find grounds to appeal. If you can establish medical necessity, you will probably win.

I was turned down by Kaiser too they want you have a BMI of 40 or greater or 35 or greater with either diabetes or sleep apnea joint pain HTN or cholesterol are not considered as qualifying comorbidities in their book. Stinks.

What have you been advised by your PCP?

My understanding is that Kaiser will approve and perform the surgery IF in the opinion of your PCP, surgery is a "Medical Necessity".

The surgery will probably improve some of your other medical situation, which would make the surgery appropriate for your overall long range health.

I suggest that you see if you can get your PCP on the same page as you for a recommendation/referral to the Bariactric clinic.

Best wishes with that!! It?s tough sometimes going through insurance. I did it with my Band and the hoops are unreal. At least you know Kaiser does approve the Sleeve, lots of insurances still do not.

Keep fighting!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
