Do I need to be concerned about beans?

Recommended Posts

My puree stage allows refried Beans, which sounds great, but all I can think of is carbs, carbs, carbs. Same with mashed potatoes and chili. I don't want to stall, but I am truly tired of full liquids and it's time to move on to purees. Should I avoid these carby, but "allowed" things? Did anyone stall at the puree stage from increased carbs?

You aren't going to be able to eat a huge amount. Plus, the Fiber in Beans help with the carb count. Add some greek yogurt for extra Protein, or some low fat cheese.

Most people stall at the mushy stage. It may not be related to the carbs, it might play a small part. But, mainly, it's the body trying to adjust to everything, and recover from surgery and major dietary changes.

Thanks, Tiffy. The nutritionist today said "don't fill up on them, but having a little is ok". She wants me to get my Protein in first. I started mushies/puree tonight with 3 oz luscious refried Beans with low fat mozarella melted on top. It didn't fill me up but I was afraid to eat more. I waited 1/2 hr and had a Protein Shake. Next time I'll try 4 oz--it just seems like a lot for so early out. I think I might have a mega-pouch.

My 2 week followup with the surgeon was also today and he said what he was most concerned about at the 2 week point was not weight loss, but how I was feeling--did I have energy etc. He says no exercise beyond walking. I guess I was trying to get ahead of myself. He was basically saying "relax and heal".

The doc's office scale weighed substantially different from my home scale (the problem was my home scale was on carpet I figured out when I got home.) so I hadn't lost as much as I thought. That was a bummer, but he said I was losing fine as far as he was concerned. Ticker has been adjusted. Sigh.

The only issue for me is that the first day I had them I had the worst gas pains of my life. Had to lay down for an hour.

I didn't get any bad reactions from the refried Beans, but something did give me gas on the last day of mushies--but I don't know what it was. I seem to be doing better now, and I'm on soft solids--it's so much easier to be in a good mood when you can eat something good.

Tiffy

That is interesting to hear that alot of people hit a stall when they go to mushies, that has happened to me, I am still losing a little but it definately doesn't just fall off like it did with liquids. I'm trying to get Proteins in first and really haven't missed the carbs too bad yet because the Protein fills me up so fast. At least I know the stall is normal.

As for the refried Beans, they were a little piece of heaven when I went to the mushies! I have only done them about 3 times, but it is really nice to have something with that flavor. Yummy!!!:cursing:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
