Couple of Questions....

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.. I have a question regarding whole Vitamins.. I have tried 3 types of chewables and one or two that are gummies and they all make me so sick to my stomach... It's horrible. So, that NUT said I should find that smallest Multivitamin that I can swallow and take that.. Does anyone take a whole Vitamin and if so, any recommendations?

Also, my NUT has given me the green light on eating all types of foods in moderation of course. Now, I tried to eat a chicken sandwich on one piece of a bun (1/4 of the sandwich) but after the second bite, I felt like it got stuck in my throat.. The feeling wasn't great. I have had that same feeling when I eat anything that may have carbs in it. I thought that if I couldn't tolerate it -- I would feel pain in my stomach but this was more like it was not going down well.. I had to walk it out to feel better. I chewed it really well but it still didn't feel good going down. Am I crazy or does this happen to others?

Bread, Pasta, rice, carbs like that tend to swell in your tummy and make you very uncomfortable. It doesn't happen to everyone, but to a lot of folks. You may want to take a break from foods like that and try to introduce them again later and in small amounts.

But it made me uncomfortable even before it hit the tummy??

Are you taking tiny bites and chewing till your food is basically pulverized before you swallow? If so, I'm not sure then.

Are you taking very tiny bites? then you must wait in between bites until you see how it sits. You won't always have to do this, but you're newly sleeved.

I am taking very small bites and chewing them very carefully... Not sure... But, I certainly won't be trying that again for a while. I find that the most soothing items are fruit, yogurt, cheese, and Protein drinks. Anything else feels dense and not that nice feeling...

It is incredible how much this changes you -- physically and even psychologically. I used to see pizza and had to have one -- now I see one and I ponder, is it going to make me feel bad?

I wouldn't even toy with breads, any type or quantity of bread at this point. Your sleeve is still extremely swollen, and it's going to discourage you from eating if you choose things that expand in there.

The reason it made you uncomfortable before it hit your stomach is when food enters the esophagus, the stomach starts contracting to help pull the food in there. Your stomach is healing, has been brutalized, and it's trying to pull dense bread in there that is Gummy, and expanding all the way down. Then your esophagus starts having spasms trying to help get the food down. It's kind of a vicious cycle on your newly sleeved stomach.

As for the Vitamins, even the non-chewables may upset your stomach. What I do is that I take my Vitamins or pills, and then eat a small piece of deli meat or a chunk of cheese. This puts something in the stomach right on top of the pill, and gets it moving out of the stomach into the intestine where it can be absorbed. I've never had any upset stomach issues when taking pills, and I've had to take some horrific antibiotics, and other drugs post-op.

You may need to stay on mushies longer. Meaning refried Beans, greek yogurt, pureed chili, pureed meats, use Condiments to help with meat going down. You're not even a month out, and your body may just not be ready for solid or even semi-solid foods.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
