What am I doing wrong...

TIFF save me!!!

I was sleeved April 16th 2010. My surgery went wonderful. And since then I have LOST about 15 pounds give or take a pound or two.

I get my Dr. required amount of Protein, I get my Water, I slack on my vits (trying hard though), I'm at a loss.

Background on me.

It turns out after surgery I am allergic to not that I just dont like them. But I am allergic to un-natural protein, powders, shots, drinks, you name it I cant take it.

So my diet had to be slightly altered. I follow all guides my dr could ork with me for. He had never seen something so odd before and hes been doing this for years.

Anywho, I first was thinking, my body was in shock:scared0:. And then after two weeks of that, I thought,

Maybe just maybe it was cause I had lost 55 pounds before my surgery, and I was in body freak out mode.:eek:

Ok so now whats the deal??:)

I eat something little every 2 hours, I drink all the time except right after a meal. Any idea's?:)

So, is your question about the amount you are or aren't losing or the allergy??

My regular dr couldn't resolve my post-op gall bladder issues so sent me to a Gastroenterologist. A very short, probably 15 minute appointment with her and I was on the right medication, life was back to normal.

Maybe seeing a specialist or some combination of nutritionist, gastro specialist or allergist would help?

If you are referring to the weight loss being slow - it will happen. I lost a bunch quickly, and then slowed down to a steady rate.

oh! LOL

I was shocked to have lost about 10 pounds in the first 5 days post-op. Since then I have averaged about 2 pounds a week. Definitely slower than someone who starts with a higher BMI but probably pretty average for someone who started where I did.

It is frustrating at times. I wouldn't panic yet : ) Adjust your calories for a couple of days, then your carbs, then go back to the basic plan. Seems to shake up the body again.

I weigh every day, 99% of the time. I won't weigh on any other scale except my own - other than my dr of course : ) Sometimes I am down, then up a little, then down and down again. So long as it is going in an overall downward mode, I am good : )

Hang in there! It will happen : )

How many carbs and calories? And, I know exercise has been limited, but you should be able to see some scale movement with the increased walking.

During my losing stage, I stuck to 4 meals a day. They consisted of a minimum of 15grams of Protein, and a couple bites of veggies if I had room. Typically, I didn't have room, and that helped keep my carb count super low.

If you are eating every 2 hours, do you how many calories you're getting daily?

Did you have any diabetes or borderline insulin issues? Have you ever been tested for insulin resistance? Something might be going on metabolically, and if you haven't had post-op labs pulled, it may be a good time to see either your PCP or surgeon to get some labs pulled.

After I lost a considerable amount of weight, my thyroid levels changed. Not in a bad way, they actually became more normal. I was on the low/normal range for my T3 and T4. Now, I am as normal as can be.

My days round out about

700-750 calories

About 55-57 carbs good carbs (the heavy hit is from my oatmeal in the morning)

29 grams of Fat

and 68-70 grams of protein

I am getting my walking starting today about 2 miles I really hope that it helps.

I had my blood drawn about 2.5 weeks ago and everything was ideal. I am seeing my bariatrician (I think thats how its spelt) a nurtionist specializing in WLS, on May 27th.

Katrina, you're doing real well with the weight loss. Better than most. I don't understand what your concern is. You will not have the kind of weight loss that happens right after surgery. Everyone slows down after that initial wave, and then we have to deal with stalls. It's on everyone's road to success. Try not to worry.

I think the exercise will help. On the oatmeal, have you ever considered adding an egg white? It ups the Protein count by 6-7 grams, also adding some ground flax seed will give you more Fiber combating some of the carb load. Just a couple of ideas.

With the increased walking, try increasing calories by 100 a couple days then dropping back down. Even if it's just an extra cheese wedge or Tbsp of Peanut Butter. If you like avocados, they are an excellent source of good fats and calories. I love them, and eat 2-3 weekly. We need fat for our bodies to function properly just like we need an adequate amount of sodium, and Water.

Just getting the increased walking will get things burning, also make sure you've taken measurements. The scale may not move much at first, but you'll probably see some inches come off especially around your thighs and lower abdomen. When I was walking more, I noticed my clothes fitting better in those 2 areas.

Thanks for popping into my topic. But I was wondering what you ment by the fact I wont have the kind of weight loss that happens right after surgery. I am a month out and 15/17 pounds is my great loss of the post surgery wave.

I dont mind the ups and downs, I am at least not gaining and I love that. But I thought I would have seen a little more drop in weight.

I know dont compair, but people who had surgery right near mind and some same day. Have lost up to 30 pounds. I figured I was doing something wrong.

I love the idea its a marathon not a sprint, but really if it slows down after awhile what the heck am I gonna do?:scared0::001_huh:

Tiff, I hope so. I am looking forwards to starting my walking tonight. I think 2 miles will feel good, then some nice tuna fish for dinner. LOL

Hey Katrina.... I'm 4 weeks out today. I lost 13lbs in the first 10 days and not an ounce since. I'm super frustrated too. Exercising, getting my Water, my protien, low carb count. I don't know......

I'm just trying to ride it out but I'm scared I'll never loose the weight. I know it will get better.... its just hard not to buy into the years of diet failure that are following us around.

Probably not a helpful post.... but I figured I'd vent a bit

I hope we get going soon!!!!

It will its gotta, we got no where else to go and the rest of our lives to drop all this weight.

Against my better judgement I took an all natural metabolism booster this morning called fucothin. Its stimulant free and very mild... but still.... I had surgery to quit all this kinda #%$!.

I really feel stupid for even complaining because I told myself that I was most likely going to hit a stall, and that I should be prepared.....it's really common, body adjusting to weight loss..... etc etc.

Its weird how we can know something to be true logically but it just wont sink in :scared0:

Stacey, it looks like you are about exactly my size, and I can totally relate to your frustration. I was sleeved on March 17 and I have lost 19 pounds so far. I was stuck for almost a month when I was about a month out, and I was totally pulling my hair out!

But... I'm almost 1/3 of the way to goal after just over two months, and that's with almost no exercise. I've been losing inches and I am back into a lot of clothes I hadn't been able to wear for a while. And I haven't been hungry and I haven't been obsessing about food. Not such a bad deal overall, right?

The reality is that those of us who don't have that much to lose are going to lose slower (in terms of pounds on the scale) than those with more to lose. So I am doing my very very best to relax and not torture myself because I want the weight off instantly. I'm averaging about two pounds a week, and I've NEVER been able to maintain that pace consistently without starving myself AND putting in hours and hours at the gym. So I'll take it.

      I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

      Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

        I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

        Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation.       Soooo I am coming to a realization
      of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

        I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

        Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

        Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

        I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

        I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

        BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
