I sometimes don't get on the scale for about a week since it's discouraging to see that scale go up a pound or two when I'm eating so little! I do agree that excercise/ walking whatever is key. It looks like you've got some interesting places to go walking, so keep it up even if for only 15 minutes a day. I just know you are going to succeed...it is a learning process and you are learnig! Great for you Tiffany!

Tiffany,

I just got a chance to look at your incision video on you tube. I know that it was taken over a week ago, so I hope everything is looking much better now. You mentioned in another thread that you don't have insurance right now, so I'm sure that's been an issue for you. Girl, please go back to the ER if your incisions are not getting better. You don't want them to heal over as big holes in your stomach. After a certain point of them not beng closed up, the dead tissue has to be taken out in order for it to heal properly.

You're going to get 50 different opinions about how to handle irritated incision sites any time you post about it. Don't try to take advice from all of us armchair doctors. Get some medical attention. If you can't afford to pay, they have payment plans and financial assistance - you just have to ask for it. The weight loss will come so take care of your health first. We all want the best for you.

Hey Tiffany!

Glad your scale moved today! And in the right direction!

Just a funny thought. Before surgery, I was only going to count the whole numbers, wasn't gonna mess around with the .2, .5, .8. And then, after surgery, I discovered how important those tenths were!!! LOL I am absolutely thrilled on days when I go from .8 to .2 : )

You are a walk up on me today!

I'm glad the stall broke. I can only imagine how frustrating it can be since I never experienced a true stall until I was a few pounds away from goal. I just wasn't willing to not follow the guidelines, and I think that's why I didn't experience stalls, and why the weight did kind of melt off for me. We started right around the size weight, and BMI so you will lose faster than say someone that is 70lbs lighter than us. But, you gotta stick to the program if you want it to melt off. I had to be strict to get my results. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it to hit goal within 6.5 months, and continue to lose a few more pounds to get me to a healthy/normal weight per the BMI chart.

I am STILL not losing. It is almost three weeks out, and honestly I am PISSED. I SWORE to myself, that I wouldnt do this, that I wouldnt be upset if I hit a stall or whatever. That was a lie. I feel like I did this surgery for no reason right now, and I HATE to say that, but I just dont understand what is going on. I eat atleast HALF if not a quarter of what I used to. I spend more time thinking about food NOW, then I ever did before surgery, which is the complete opposite of what I wanted. I am just frustrated and the longer I dont lose the more stressed I am getting. I hate this.

Looking at your ticker you have lost over 17lbs since your op, which was 21 days ago. This is my loss at that point, bear in mind UK dates are DD/MM/YYYY. In that period I lost 18 if we run a 4 week window, 15 if we look at a 3 week window.

10/05/2009 230 15/05/2009 229 18/05/2009

227 25/05/2009 221 01/06/2009 215 08/06/2009 212

Please don't beat yourself up, you are normal, your body is dealing with swellings and adapting to change. You are still suffering the effects of the anaesthetic too which can make you low.

It will work out, stop thinking about it. Read a book, watch some TV and believe in it. You won't lose the weight in a month or two, for me it has taken 11 months to get to an end point but it has been totally worth it and I am confident it is permanent. Take heart and courage mon brave.

All the best,

Jane

Before surgery I went to the bookstore and bought a diet journal entitled 'I will lose weight this time'. I love it - it has a place to write everything - serving size, calories, fat, Protein, carbs and also track fluids, exercise, weight etc. My plan from my Dr is 600 calories - <30 grams fat - <30 grams carbs, >60 grams protein and 64 or more Fluid ounces. I checked Amazon.com and it is available. I highly recommend it.

I came home from the hospital and immediately put on 4 lbs!! I couldn't understand it but I knew not to get too upset because with all I'd been through and only eating liquids, etc., that it must be a temporary situation. I guess like someone said here, my body was retaining Fluid because of the trauma and swelling.

If your incision sites were a bit irritated, you could definitely be retaining Fluid. It's your body's way of helping deal with any toxins and with the healing process itself.

It makes me feel better and I hope it makes you feel better Tiffany that there are actual reasons why the scale wouldn't reflect you eating so much less than normal. And if you are like me, I've been on so many diets that worked and then they didn't, no matter what I did. So it's hard to stay confident when we've been through things that just didn't turn out well. This time it will. I'm convinced that this is different and we aren't just dieting. We actually do have help - a large portion of our stomach is gone and our body composition has changed forever.

Also, our stomach produces hormones and all that changed with the surgery too. I don't know how many stories I've read about people becoming depressed after the surgery. I'm trying very hard to keep that from happening to me and to stay upbeat no matter what. The people who are so supportive here help with that.

I am glad you've seen a drop in the scale now - be happy that you have a plan and you're headed in the right direction. We're all pulling for you!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
