Are leaks actually caused by overeating or are they just something that happens???

My guess would be yes and yes. From what I have read, the risk of a leak goes down tremendously after the first 7 days. So you are pretty darn safe! :svengo:

After that point, it would seem to be a very unfortunate instance of a weakness in the stomach seam or extensive over eating. I really don't get the overeating tho, just on personal experience that even a bite or two too much causes great discomfort.

Relax and enjoy the ride. There are plenty of other things to worry about.

When I was first sleeved, I had a really hard time telling when I was full. If I ate until I was full, I felt like I was going to burst 20 min later and it was very uncomfortable for at least an hour.

I learned to stop before I felt full. Honestly, if you could break a staple or develop a leak from overeating, I would have done it.It hurt so bad to be that full, but I did learn to stop way before that feeling.

Eating with the sleeve is a learning experience.

I figure that for the first 4-6 weeks, I'm not going to eat much. Just enough to "keep body and soul together" and get my Protein in. That plus the hydration will be enough to keep me busy!

After 6 wks, my surgeon says, your stomach has >90% of its original structural strength, so the risk of actually HURTING yourself from overeating is much lower. I'm WAY more worried about leaks and injury than I am about not getting in that one last bite...

Okay... I'll settle down. I love this forum, I would be so freaked out right now if I couldn't bounce this stuff off someone.

BTW.... I went to lunch with friends today and had some blond ale smoked gouda Soup. It went down like a dream and I felt so normal. Its weird how those huge portions arnt even appealing any more.

There's several members on OH that have reported leaks out much further out than the 4-6 weeks with VSG and RNY. Grant it, they had some slight symptoms, but not the big red flag waving symptoms.

One patient was 4 months out (it took this particular patient almost 1 year to heal and 5 other surgeries), and the other was 7 months out.

You can search the members profiles if you would like their screen names, I will share the 2 that I have bookmarked via PM. I'm not going to blast their names all over this forum because it's just inconsiderate. Or, you can go to OH, and use the search feature with "leaks months out" or "vsg leaks later". The stories are out there, you just have to be willing to find them, and you'd be surprised at what you find.

I told Tiffany this via PM, and the only reason I did not want to share this out here is because people will freak out. But, it's a fact that it can and has happened. I know it sounds preachy or whatever, but that is why I think it's so absolutely ridiculous to advance the post-op diet more quickly than prescribed by your surgeon. Grant it, I realize they are not gods, but my thought process is that they've been doing this stuff a lot longer than I have been, and well, I probably should trust their experience since I trusted them to excise 85% of stomach out of my body. For me, it's a pretty simple concept, but hey others have done and haven't had any issues. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

It sounds like you're doing great! From my understanding, the 2oz/15 minutes "rule" meant you need to drink at least 2 oz. every fifteen minutes or you would not be able to get the full 64oz. in at the beginning. I wouldn't worry about drinking too much so long as it's not uncomfortable. :thumbup1:

My post-op paperwork mentions sipping every 10 minutes to get in your daily Fluid requirement but it also lists (during phase 1 & 2) that one should not consume more than 2 oz during a 15 minute period. It lists this twice. This is why I was asking if drinking more than 2 oz would cause issues with my new stomach.

To steal a phase from another trade, "measure twice eat once" :thumbup1: I mean that extra bit you may cram in is just not worth it. My surgeons office did specifically say that slight overeating putting a tug on the suture line will make it take longer to heal. Imagine if you had a cut on your arm even with stitches on the cut and you pulled at both sides of it three to four times a day pulling the skin and stretching the cut--do you think it would heal the same as if you did not put any unnecessary pressure on it?

If you do things right the first 6 weeks you are more likely to get a fully healed suture line.

Sorry, I misunderstood your question! My dietitian never told me that. I would say go with what your surgeon says, or perhaps call him?

You need to be measuring at the beginning. It's to hard to tell when you are full. And my full feeling at the beginning was very different than it is now. I couldn't really tell I was full until I felt it in my throat and that was not eating more than 2 oz. Now I get the normal tummy full feelings. Measure everything in the beginning and don't eat more than 2ozs if that's what your doc says. Why chance injuring yourself and your sleeve?

Its hard to figure out when i'm full. I know my stomach is tight.... but its always tight. Its so easy to over do it. I know there is a danger point around 21 days out. I guess thats when the stitches or glue disolve. If I make it to 30 days I'm callin it good!!!!!

I have come to learn (very quickly) that if my tummy starts to squeeze a bit i had better stop stuffing food into it because in the beginning i would think "oh just one more bite" yeah right! that one more bite certainly bit me back. . I was in 'god call me an ambulance" pain for about 20 - 30 minutes with the slimes and everything. . . now if i feel the slight squeeze after a couple bites i stop right then and there i really hate that squeezy feeling. . . i also have found that "hard" food doesn't agree very well, like toast, crackers, sausage, fruit, certain vegatables, etc. . . so i like to stay with my soft stuff, yogurt, cheese, very well cooked rice and mac/cheese, eggs, etc. . . i'm such a baby. . . hehehe:001_tt2:

Hey Tiff,

Thanks for sharing the good and the bad. Yes.... it freaks me out a bit, but its certainly info we all need.

I should probably add that the times I felt over full were way past the post op diet phase. I followed the post op diet to the letter, and stayed on mushies and liquids longer than I was supposed to just because it was more comfortable.

Has anyone ever heard of the "deep breath" rule of feeling full? As you are eating, there will be some point at which you take a deep, comfortable breath and sort of sigh as it's released. That is your body telling you that you have reached the full point. I've been watching for that signal since being sleeved, and had good luck with not over eating.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
