First Consult Next Week

Recommended Posts

Hello All......

I've been lurking your site for a couple of weeks and I finally took the plunge to see about having the VSG surgery. I've been fighting w/WL for years.

I have been on Weight Watchers for the last 5 yrs (on and off) and I did lose 100 lbs but unfortunately I have put most of it back on. I'm so sick of fighting this.

What bought me to look into the sleeve surgery is that I've been having trouble with my left knee. I'm only 35 yrs old. I met with my orthopedic a week ago and found out that I have athririts and both the insides of both knees are rubbing bone on bone w/a possible torn meniscus. I had an MRI today and will see my dr again on Monday.

At any rate, I finally submitted my registration last week to a dr in Gonzales, LA to see if I could get my insurance to cover the surgery when I found out that I had a medical necessity. Unfortunately, the insurance will not be paying for the surgery so it will be out of pocket.

Since that was the case, I decided to hand pick my own doctor and I wanted it done in Lafayette, LA.

I am a little nervous but excited @ the same time. Are there any tips that I should be aware of for my first consult? I do know 2 people (who are person friends of mine) who had the surgery done w/this particular doctor and have done great.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Carrie and welcome.

Like you I'm just preparing for my first consult, tomorrow...

I've read a whole load of information both on this site and around the internet and have come up with a list of questions to ask the surgeons. I know I'll forget the questions if they aren't written down so I'll just print them off and make notes when talking to them.

I have 2 booked, one tomorrow and another on the 15th, so I can compare the two and see who I feel comfortable with.

I know I'd rather see at least 2 surgeons to get the different opinions and to have something to compare.

Good luck with your consult.

Sparkle....

I started a 3 ring binder about a month ago when I started looking into the surgery. I printed off several pages and made notes as well to ask the doctor. I know next Tuesday I will see the nutritionist first, watch a video then see the DR. Good luck with your consults:)

Hey Carrie! I'm not sleeved, YET ;-) I'm just starting the process and next week have checkups with my Primary Care doc and my OB/GYN since I have PCOS and hope to have both of them write whatever kind of letters have to be written when submitting all the paperwork for approval. Then, I guess it's on to meeting with surgeons. I'm having FAITH that all the doors will be opened for me when it gets down to the nitty gritty of getting insurance approval. I don't want any other kind of surgery so I know that my docs are going to have to make a killer case for why VSG is the only kind I should have and then God's going to smile on that killer case and soften the hearts of the "approvers" at the insurance company, lol.

Anyway, I saw you were from Louisiana so I wanted to say hey since I'm a LA girl too :-) All my stuff will be going on in Shreveport unless I find out there's just a world renowned VSG surgeon somewhere else in the state, lol. Somebody speak up if there is!!

Best wishes on everything!! Can't wait to see all your updates and I bet you'll be in surgery before you know it with you being self pay and not having to jump through the insurance hoops!! Be blessed!!

Krystal

Hi Krystal!

Yep, I'm from Opelousas. Do you live in Shreveport?

I wish you well with all of your testing and seeking approval. I'm sure everything will be just fine. It's nice to find someone else around here to talk to.

I'm a little nervous as I don't like Dr's to begin with but I'm so ready to get on with my life.

Good luck and keep in touch!

Hey Carrie. I'm from Central LA, bout an hour away from Alexandria. Are there any docs that do the VSG in Alexandria, Lake Charles, Lafayette that you've heard outstanding things about? The ones in Shreveport haven't done that many VSG's and that's worrying me a little. Although the one I've spoken with thus far over the phone is a general surgeon and has done partial gastrectomies for reasons other than weight loss for years. LOL, I'm just sooooo concerned with making sure I'm in the best hands. I have United Health Care through hubby's job and I'm thinking that there are other docs in Louisiana that would be considered in network besides just the ones in Shreveport. I'm an hour from Alex, 2 from Lake Charles and 3 from Lafayette so having it done down that way would still be doable for after care and such.

Anyway, let us know how everything goes! I know it will all be great for ya! Looking forward to getting to know ya!

God Bless,

Krystal

Wow,

I lived in Alexandria for couple of yrs and graduated from NSU in 2001.

I have BCBS and they won't cover me. I think it's ridiculous. But anyway, I originally was going to Gonzales, LA to Dr Drake Bellengar but have decided to go to Dr Gary Stevens in Lafayette, LA. He has operated on 2 people that I know and they have done remarkably well thus far.

I do know that there is a Carson Cunningham and a Dr Chu as well. All 3 of the doctors from what I gather also go to Lake Charles as well.

Hey Carrie, I talked to some of Dr. Stevens office staff in Lafayette today. She was really nice. She couldn't give me any stats on how many sleeves he's done and his leak or complication rates but I gave her my email and asked if she could send them to me later. She said she's gonna try and get some things together. So, that's cool.

You know, I wish you could just set up appts to meet with these docs instead of having to go through all this seminar stuff. I'm so impatient, LOL. I want to meet with the docs FIRST and get my questions answered then have a chance to pray about them and see where I feel like I'm meant to go. But, it's not seeming to work that way, lol. Why can't it be as easy as meeting with pediatricians was when I was searching before my son was born? THAT was simple, call, set up a meeting, talk and ask questions for 30 mins and done. Oh well, guess I'll just keep on hurrying up and waiting ;-)

Hi there Carrie

Good luck for tomorrow.... my consult went well... chatted first to the dietitian, then Psych, then the surgeon... My next one is next Monday, so I can then at least compare and contrast the two.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
