Wondering about the doc I might use

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I haven't gotten a for sure doctor yet. I want to go to my PCP first and have him refer me to one. BUT, I am going to ask him about this one doctor who did the lap band on a friend of mine and he came highly recommended. I called this doctor's office and spoke for a long while with the desk and she answered a ton of questions for me with no problem at all. And I felt ok with him being the one that I might be referred to. After reading about making sure your doc has done 300 or more VSG's I'm second guessing myself. This doc has only done 10 to 15 VSG's for weight loss. BUT he is also a general surgeon and has been doing similar surgeries to the VSG for stomach cancer and other reasons for many, many years. She said he loves the VSG surgery and would love to be doing them more than any other WLS but hasn't because there are only a couple insurance companies that cover and around here, most are not going to have the money to self pay, so that makes sense. Cuz I'm not going to be able to self pay if my insurance declines me because my BMI isn't 40.

Anyway, he has had zero complications from the VSG's he has done. So do I take comfort in that and the fact that he is also a very, very experienced general surgeon who has done a ton of surgeries involving the stomach and even removal of part of the stomach? Or do I write him off completely as a choice because he's only done 10 to 15 VSG's?

Thanks in advance and God bless!

Krystal

I would want to know how many gastrectomies he's performed. A lot or several isn't a solid enough answer for me.

My revision hadn't perform a ton of revisions, but he had done over 200 sleeves, and over 400 RNY surgeries, and he had removed several lap bands without revising. So, while that might not of been good enough for some, it was good for me. Plus, he had zero leaks, or deaths with any of his patients. I met one of his patients and she raved about him. I grilled him intensely. I was his first leak, and honestly I can't blame him. The band destroyed my stomach tissue, and we didn't know the extent until he was in there. I honestly don't fault him for my complication. He repaired the leak immediately, and I had a much quicker recovery than other patients that have experienced leaks due to his surgical intervention to repair the leak.

A lot of this surgery is about surgical technique. A surgeon can use a standard size bougie and still make big sleeves or leave part of the fundus behind. The 300 number gives more practice therefore perfecting technique. And, of course, decreasing complications due to several surgeries under their belt.

Research, ask for patient testimonials, and get as much info on him and his sleeve patient's results.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
