Way TMI Question about Post-Op Bowels. Please help.

Recommended Posts

I have had watery bowels since my first movement 4 days post-op two days ago. Today, I noticed some fresh bright red blood on the toilet paper. Is this normal?

TIA,

Pennie

Are you cramping or straining? I know when I was going through the liquid in, liquid out phase, I switched over to sensitive formula baby wipes because regular bathroom tissue made my hiney raw, and I had some blood on the paper. I know that is too much information, but it's what happened for me.

The important thing is to watch because if the blood is coming from irritated tissue then you may take extra care like what Tiffy said with wipes. You might even try using an ointment for that area. But it the blood is coming out from the internal bowel then you probably would want to get examined from a doctor. I suspect it's from irritation due to loose stools.

Bright red blood when you wipe is rarely of concern. It generally indicates a small broken blood vessel in the anus area or from a hemmoroid. Dark brownish, blackish blood actually in the stool, or any appearance of coffee grounds in the stool is cause for concern and if you see that you should immediatly contact your doctor.

Pat dry, avoid wiping. You can use Preparation H or witchhazel wipes to shrink the inflamed tissue.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
