Nausea and Reflux - two week post op

Recommended Posts

Anyone go through some sudden nausea? I had some in the hospital and very mild the first couple days out, now it is back and I can't even go into the kitchen. Smelling anything at all just about gives me the dry heaves.

At night I wake up with an awful taste in my mouth. I brush my teeth before bed, once during the middle of the night, and again in the morning, but I can't get rid of this weird taste. Almost like some Soup I had about 4 days ago, I keep burping it up. I also have a burning feeling from my mouth to my sternum, just uncomfortable.

I called the nurse and she said to keep taking as much Fluid as I can, if I can't get enough in to come to the hospital. But we are having a snowstorm and my surgeon is in surgery...

So far I have had a popsicle today. It was all right, I choked it down. I am going to try something else now. Just no desire for any food or drink...

Should I call back and ask for something for the nausea? She said I could take tums...

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I had to go on Prilosec because I was having some reflux symptoms. Tums nor Pepcid Complete didn't work once the acid was overproducing in my tummy. The bad taste in your mouth could be from you body being in ketosis.

This sounds gross, but to combat the nausea from "food" smells, I smeared a dab of Vick's vapor rub under my nose to avoid smelling stuff.

I suffered quite a bit of nausea, and was on phenegran and reglan, but both made me exhausted. My surgeon switched me over to Zofran which worked fabulously with no side effects.

i have not had the reflux problem, but nausea has taken over my life at this point. and the doc, as lovely as he is, has told me i just have to wait it out. that my body is adjusting and needs some time. they called some phenagren(sp?) but about 30 minutes after taking it i vomited! the thought of food makes me want to hurl! i stay in my room most of the time! i sleep a lot because it seems to be the only relief i can get! we have a good family friend that is a retired nurse and she checks in on me every day, making sure im not dehydrated and all that! the best advise i can give you from what ive been thru is just drink as much as you can tolerate! maybe this will be worth it in the end! :biggrin0:

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
