I am new here and am researching where to go in Mexico. Having been reading through these forums for the last few days it seems like the argument is between Dr. Aceves and Dr. Reyes. Quite a few people have posted saying they went to Dr. Reyes but only a few people have said they went to Dr. Aceves.

Has anyone been to Dr. Aceves recently and have an experience to share?

It looks like the biggest complaint with Dr. Reyes is the chance of infection. Are there any other issues that might be of concern with choosing Dr. Reyes?

Sorry to stir up the waters but I have a 7 yr old and a 5 yr old that depend on me and I need to go the safest route. Thanks so much for your information and help.

There are many, many of us who have been to Dr. Aceves. We are all happy. I've not heard on this board or others of any complaints or complications. I cose him for his experience and also because he has the F.A.C.S. designation which was important to me. He is the president of the Mexican College of Bariatric Surgeons.

Hi ,

I just had my surgery on 11/19 with Dr. Aceves. The entire process was incredible! They have everything down to a science in terms of tests, interviews with the docs, nursing care etc. Dr. Aceves and Dr. Campos are the most wonderful people. Caring, professional, top notch on all levels. I think that they EACH visited me about 4-5 times a day. Can you imagine that happening in the US?

Feel free to ask any questions....MANY MANY people on this forum have been thrilled with his practice!

Best of luck with your decision!

Kris

The surgery / recovery aside it looks like the experience with Dr. Reyes is very safe in general. With the escorts throughout your stay. Is the same true for Dr. Aceves?

Also, I have been unable to find a site for Dr. Aceves that lists how many days in the hospital will be required and if you are placed in a private hotel room for some of your stay. Is hotel included in the package? I cannot seem to find any pricing information about Dr. Aceves.

Thanks again for all your help.

With Dr. Aceves you fly into San Diego. His driver, Ernest meets you at the airport and drives you to the hospital. Dr. Aceves' staff meets you there and efficiently walk you through the blood/urine/EKG/chest xray.

Ernesto then drives you to the hotel for the night. You have your last meal - lol. Dr. Aceves and Dr. Campos either meet you there that evening or first thing in the morning to discuss the surgery, aftercare, diet, etc.

Ernesto picks you up in the morning. The Anesthesiologist meets with you at the hospital and also the Internest to go over your history and test results one last time.

You have your surgery, a leak test is done, and go to Recovery room.

After that you return to your room. All rooms are private with private baths. There is a large couch there for your escort to use. I was quite comfortable on it when I went with my sister a few weeks ago.

The next day they do another leak test with blue dye. More recovery. Both Doctor Aceves and Dr. Campos come in to check on you at least 3 - 4 times during the day, each day. Dr. Campos is there almost 24/7 if any complications arise.

On day three there is another leak test with a contrast element and xrays. You rest one more day.

The next morning, if you are ready, Ernesto drives you back to the airport for your return. Sis was not feeling all that well and Dr. Aceves asked if she wanted to stay and extra day.

The hospital is well equipped and the nurses very kind and efficient. It is probably the cleanest hospital I've ever been in. There is an attendent there that cleans constantly.

All in all it was one of the best experiences I've had with surgery and being in a hospital.

Thanks so much for your quick responses. Rosebud that breakdown is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks a ton!! I was worried about how I would find where to go but being picked up at the airport and dropped off there is awesome news. I understand from your post that you spend one night at a hotel and the entire trip is about 5 days. Barring any complications that is. If you need to stay an extra day is that charged separately?

Yes...as long as your flight arrives prior to 10:30 am or so...We ended up spending a night in San Diego before..Ernesto picked us up at the hotel and we were on our way to Mexicali in the am. You are escorted EVERY minute! The hotel we stayed in the night before surgery was great..all paid for except for the dinner.

The hospital room was immaculate as Rosebud mentioned. I believe that housekeeping came into the room about 3x a day to mop etc. My hubby is 6'1 and managed to sleep quite comfortably on the leather sofa in the room.

Towels etc were provided for the shower.

So everything except for companion food and last supper is covered by his fee. I don't know what the charge would be for an extra night.

You did ask if you your stay at the Lucerna Resort the night before surgery is included and yes, it is.

Somebody should move these posts out of Dr. Almanza'a thread. Dr. Aceves deserves his own thread, not intermingled with Dr. Almanza's thread.

I'm 99% sure he would not have charged for the extra day. He found a hiatal hernia in both myself and my sister and didn't charge extra for the repair.

I would say over half of us in here went to Dr. Aceves. I also feel his is the most experienced surgeon in Mexico and that is why over half of us did choose him to do our surgery. That is one reason, and the other is that the hospital he operates out of is top knotch!

Did you guys use a patient coordinator or did you work through him directly? If you used a coordinator what was your experience with them and who did you use. (Any links to sites would be helpful.)

Thanks in advance!

Here you go - Dr. Aceves is totally AWESOME and LOTS of us on this site have used him. He's performed over 700 sleeves with no leaks. You won't find a better surgeon anywhere (IMO).

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL
