Five days down on my 14-day preop diet!

Recommended Posts

Well, it hasn't been quite as difficult as I thought it would be, urge and temptation wise. My surgeon requires a liquid diet with one meal of 5oz meat and 2 cups veggies daily. I've been drinking the Premier Protein drinks from costco. I even heated one last night and drank it like cocoa! Not bad at all, and I'm not a sweet tooth so I was worried about the Protein Drinks. My meals have been well-planned, and I'm doing good in that department so far.

I'm getting nervous and excited all at the same time. Just a few more days, and my life will be changed forever. I pray about this every waking hour, and I appreciate any and all prayers from those of you "in the same boat" and those of you who have crossed the bridge and provide all of us newbies with such valuable and appreciated information each day!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

Yup, i'm in the same boat as you are. . . my surgery is on Dec. 29th. . . I start my pre op diet on the 17th. . . I didn't have to do a preop, but told doctor i would like to do one. . . he told me it would definately make his job alot easier, soooooo. . . like you I'll be doing 2 Protein Shakes and 1 meal consisting of a palm sized piece of meat and a palm sized portion of veggies. . . interesting. . . well, if you haven't found it bad, then that is good. . . i hope i'll be the same way. . . this will be my 18th major surgery and I'm as nervous and jittery as a june bug! guess surgery isn't something you get used to. . . good luck to you, when is your surgery?

Thanks so much for the prayers!

My surgery is on Monday, December 14. Did all my decorating for Christmas this week so I can enjoy the season while recovering at home.

twobluecats,

Sounds like you are doing great. You are in my prayers. The 14th will be here quickly and the best way for your nerves to be calmed is for that date to get here as quickly as possible I'm sure.

Insurance finally approved my sleeve. My date is Dec 29th. My doc only requires a 3 day liquid pre op diet. But I may do a little more just to be on the safe side. It's funny. Even though I'm more certain than ever this is what I need to do, now that I have a confirmed date it is tougher on the nerves. I'm nervous about the surgery. But perhaps more so I'm nervous about grieving for a loss of food. The cold hard reality that my new stomach just will not allow it I guess will help force me to move past the grieving process. But wow is it gonna be different.

Hang in there - you are almost 1/2 way there and we are all rooting for your success! I know I will be a "nervous Nellie" when I start the liquid diet pre-op plan, because it makes the reality of surgery oh-so-close. Maybe the nerves will keep me on track - it encourages me to hear it has not been as tough as you had thought. This is the month we choose to change our lives!

Thanks so much for all the support. Longhorn, I know what you mean about the "no more Whataburger" (well, you didn't say that, but that is reality for me! ha!). It's just so hard to wrap my mind around the fact that I will be able to control the cravings and curb the volume eating that got me where I am today.

If it weren't for the thoughtful people who share their story and their progress on this board and OH, I'm not sure I could have made this decision. I know that others have walked in my shoes and know what it's like to be overweight, and it's a blessing to hear from those same folks after they've done this. I just have to have faith that I can do it too!

Hi twobluecats,

I have been on my pre-op for 7 days now - only 3 more to go! I am having surgery on the 8th. Unfortunalety my doctor's pre-op diet only consist of liquids (no meals). Around day 5 I realized that I wasnt getting very hungry anymore. Another girl in the office brought in Chinese for lunch today which has made it kind of hard but with only 3 days to go I CAN DO ANYTHING!

I'm getting anxious about my decision too. Because of schedules and family situations I will be traveling to Mexico alone for my surgery. My husband is unable to go with me because we have a special needs son. Because of his medical needs it is impossible to leave him with anyone else. But with honest advice and encouragement from a lot of you on this board I really do feel confident that I can handle the next week.

I know my family will struggle next week without me. But I know that I am taking steps to make sure that I am around to look after them a whole lot longer. It took a HUGE step in faith and perserverance for me to make this decision for my life and I have to say I am very proud of myself for doing it!

I appreciate having a place I could just voice all of those emotions. It has given me the final confidence in myself that I needed. Please pray for me (and my beautiful family) next week.

Funny how different the process is all over the world. I am having surgery in Israel, and the 14-day pre-op diet is a high Protein, very low carb Atkins diet. No Protein Shakes at all, pre or post op. After reading about it here, I asked my surgeon, and she said that for the sleeve she does not prescribe it. Strange, isn't it? Hope it works...

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
