My VSG was a one week ago, as of tomorrow. I spent 5 nights in the hospital due to uncontrolled vomiting. Surgeon says things went beautifully with no complications with the VSG. Vomiting has eased but CONSTANT nausea still persists. I have felt so bad I haven't had my laptop on since after surgery. Anyone else do this? Can you help?

Yes- I did it too..... and I also spent 5 days in the hospital because of it. I haven't run into anyone else that spent that many days in the hospital because of nausea and vomiting.

If it's any consulation, I'm now 9 months out..... 154 pounds lighter......... and it DOES pass. I had no one to talk to and hadn't found this site until I was a bout 6 months out.

I too had no complications with the surgery, everything went according to plan, but I was one of the ones that got sick. I've nevere had problems with anesthesia, and I think that made me sick too. Also the pain meds they gave me made me sick, and never had problems with that either.

I was sick for about 3 months. Not every day, but it was a constant battle.

It is all a blur, in the past, I survived it and so will you. I hope your's doesn't last as long as mine did. I still will get sick if I eat too much or too fast....

Just take your time when you eat, it has a lot to do with it. Even when I thought I was eating slow..... I wasn't.....

I still can't eat breakfast- I have Protein drinks for my morning meal. If they bothered me, I can't remember- because I knew I had to get my protein in.

I wish I could help you more, but the best advice I can give you is to document everything, keep a food journal, and how things effect you- try it again in a month... and see how you do.

Drink your Water, sip sip sip- don't get dehydrated. One thing that sat well with me was powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth... it was soothing, and I liked how it tasted.

I didn't experience this, but wanted to let you know I'll keep you in my prayers. I'm glad that the VSG had no complications.

Chancie's words are so encouraging. I'm 2.5 months out and was also in the hospital for 5 days. I didn't have nausea I had excessive bleeding from one of the incisions and needed a blood transfusion. I probably didn't have nausea because he was administering a drug called Reglan which is for nausea but was not aware that it causes severe restless anxiety in some people and now 2.5 months out without anti-anxiety medication I am still anxious and depressed... It has been recommended by people here that Zophran is an effective and safe nausea medication. Have you tried it yet? As for me I got a precription from my surgeon for zophran and I will never take Reglan again. You are not alone. It is 2.5 months and most of my days are difficult. I just pray that like Chancie says we will survive in due time this will all be a blur. Keep us posted as to your progress. And you my PM me too anytime if you just need someone to talk to. I had a quite a few bouts of nausea while in the hospital and the night and the next day a came home. I was scared. (but Chancie made my days brighter!!) But I noticed the pain medication was the culprit, I stopped taking all pain meds the day after I came home and I never vomited again. It wasn't that bad pain wise, I survived. I don't know if this is what is happening to you, but it may be something that you might want to look into. Either way it will pass, good luck.

I had a band to sleeve revision a week ago today. I had major vomiting for 3 solid days, I couldn't even lay down. My doc explained to me that the area my band was removed was swollen shut. I was totally and utterly uncomfortable drain on one side, IV on next, felt like a zombie, couldn't sleep, when I did I would wake up vomiting(or should I say dry heaving..nothing to throw up). Once it went away and and swelling went down, and I could take fluids on my own I got to go home. I stayed in the hospital a total of 4 days. I hope you are doing better, know that there are others that have gone through it and made it through...Good Luck!!

your story is a prime example of why this surgery should never be done on an outpatient basis. It is still major surgery with major risks and complications. Thankfully most people sail through it...but those that don't need expert medical care!

I agree with that! A hospital, with an ICU and full service specialists in the event they are needed!

I had the sleeve done 11/4/2009. I left the hospital with nausea. Everyone kept saying that it would go away. But I was having a hard consuming anything, Water, juice, yogurt, p.shakes the only thing that would go down was popscicles.

2wks out, first post op appointment - Dr said nausea would start to go away... well it never did. It actually got worse. I started dry heaving just brushing my teeth, couldn't consume anymore than 2Tbsp of any Fluid.

On Dec 3rd, I had a EGD with dilation done. What a relief!!! The nausea is GONE!!! I can eat... I mean Drink, back to strictly liquids. I feel slight discomfort as things go down, but was told this is normal after the dilation.

During an Upper GI, they noticed the bottom of my stomach had narrowed substantially and it was causing the upper portion of my stomach to dilate because as I tried to drink/eat it was just shooting up.

What I learned as of today is that no one has the same experience and in all honesty we have to be our biggest advocates. My friend convinced me to call my Dr. and complain and so I did and two days later I was better. I was simply waiting for it to go away as it does for most, but it wasn't happening.

I say get checked out... that is how I got it resolved.

Kara that was an excellent post. The more we know the more we can ask our Dr.s when "something" is wrong. I wish there was a site on here that was/is permanent that would have all the "complications" and "results" postings reguardless of when it happened. It is really hard to go thru all the different threads to get the info. I think it would really help newbies alot. Knowing about possible complications helps us to get thoes problems solved. Just a thought, Vegas can you do this?

Carolyn - there is a forum entitled VSG Complications Support Group - which is where I would logically put a thread if I had experienced complications from surgery; unfortunately, we can't control where members post, we can only hope that they will view all the various options forums, and select the most appropriate one. It would be difficult to go back and move everyone's posts regarding complications to one specific post.

Thanks everyone for your kindness and words of wisdom. Honestly, I haven't been on here because I have just been too sick. The vomiting and nausea persists, and now after two ER visits, I do have some more info. It seems my situation maybe very similar to yours, Kara. It took over 30 minutes for one ounce of Fluid to "make it's way down". I see a surgeon on Tuesday for a possible stint. I'll keep you posted!
