feeling like I am failing

Recommended Posts

I have been struggling...I am 8days post-op and am struggling to continue with my sipping...and worried that I am not going to get my Protein in. I have tried many different Proteins and my stomach cannot tolerate any. I am feeling like I want to throw up and was dry heaving this morning. The thought of protein shakes/supplements make my stomach turn. My understanding is that I am suppose to get in 70grams of protein daily. I am lucky if I get in 5grams. I feel like I am failing myself...I am scared of what will happen if I dont follow Dr. Aceves post-op diet. I am losing so much hair..which I knew would happen..but that quickly?....I feel like a crybaby. I just want to curl up in my heating blanket and not get up. Terrible I know....

a lot of people struggle to get their Protein in the beginning. Have you tried the nectar drinks? There is a thread that lists the places you can order samples so you don't get a bunch of stuff you don't like. I hear the caribbean cooler is really good.

You are not alone. There are a bunch of people who did not like the Protein Drinks and didn't get much Protein until they moved to the mushy phase.

Jenn,

force yourself to get up and walk every hour. Baby yourself the rest of the time but keep on sipping...experiment with warm fluids, maybe sipping warm tea will be easier. From what I understand this is the hardest part of recovery but you WILL get through it! I doubt the hair loss this quickly is a result of the surgery...perhaps stress in general? Keep checking in here with us..we want to know how you're doing!

Pretty much everyone loses their hair. I have lost half my hair. I get plenty of Protein and take all sorts of Vitamins. Nothing seems to help, and from what I have read, it's pretty normal to lose your hair when you lose weight.

My surgeon told me to be more concerned about staying hydrated rather than worrying about getting in my Protein in the first couple of weeks.

Keep drinking your liquids, and I highly doubt the hairloss is from surgery this early out. I didn't start losing hair for almost 3 months, and then there's patients that get in all of their Protein plus extra protein, and they still lose their hair. It's a side effect of the surgery, and rapid weight loss, and sometimes getting in the protein can't prevent it.

It does get better.

Jenn -

I couldn't do the Protein drinks after my surgery, either, and I didn't worry all that much about getting in my Protein, especially while I was still on Clear Liquids -- I just focused on staying hydrated. Don't beat yourself up and you are NOT failing - this is the toughest part of the post-op diet. Drink warm liquids in the morning, that might help with the gagging.

If you're really concerned about getting in your protein, email Gaby at Dr. Aceves office and let her know you're not able to do the protein drinks/shakes and see what she recommends. There are a lot of different protein options. Did you check out the egg drop Soup recipe I posted? It has lots of protein and is really tasty.

I am almost 6 months out and still can't do the Protein Drinks and now my hair has started to fall out - thank goodness I have a LOT of hair so I'm hoping that it stops falling out before I lose it all.

Maybe a dumb question..........why does the hair fall out? lack of protien? I have a shaved head anyway so its not a concern for me.... Im 13 days post op now and im also having a hard time getting the protien in......

Jenn-

Please don't be so hard on yourself! You have a long road ahead of you and it will have some bumps along the way. But you will make it!

concentrate on staying hydrated! Don't put so much focus on the 70 grams of Protein. I had such a hard time too- lots of vomiting, nausea- but it does get better!

The hair loss is probably stress right now-but it's never too early to start a preventative treatment- Walmart sells a generic brand of minoxidill- that you use on your hair twice daily- it really helped me, plus I take hair, nails and skin Vitamins from them too, along with my other Vitamins.< /span>

Breath- relax- and sip-sip-sip! Keep getting plenty of fluids in.

Jenn,

are you still taking the Nexium? Is the nausea connected to acid reflex? I had to increase the nexium to twice a day. When you get to full liquids, try RTD 51 shakes or Oh yeah shakes. IF the Protein drinks are too sweet, Water them down and add crystal light packets to your taste. I also used egg drop Soup and wonton soup (minus the wontons). You will get through this.

From what I understand it's from loosing so much weight in such a short time frame -- I also think it is from the anesthesia.

I wouldn't worry about getting in all of your Protein until you're on at least mushies - even then I had a difficult time getting in all of my protein. I'm not even sure that now I get in all my protein - I eat healthy and try to stick to 3 meals a day; but I can't eat alot at any meal, so it's still hard to get in all the protein. I believe I'm getting in enough, inasmuch as all my labs came back looking "great" according to my PCP.

Hang in there, it does get easier each day.

thank you everyone.....I cannot tolerate the smell of any Protein Drink so I just chose not to have any at this point. This solving a lot of my nausea. I find that I run out of energy quickly and become very tired.

I sometimes use a sippy cup or a lidded cup with only a straw so that the smell does not get to me.

Thank you, so much, for starting this thread and asking this question. I am also 8 days out and in the same boat as you. Just the thought of protien shakes, etc is making me SICK! I am so relieved to read the other responses about focusing on hydration. I can do that!

How are you now?

Yep, me too. Six days postop. Just the scent of Protein drinks makes me nauseated. And everything with aspartame (Crystal Light, etc) tastes far too sweet all of a sudden. I am doing natural fruit popsicles, homemade broths, cream Soups thinned with skim milk and watered down fruit juices. I'll focus more on protein when I graduate to the pureed phase in two weeks.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
