Help ... coughing up black gunk

Recommended Posts

This could be reflux. I had a very similar thing cause by a hiatial hernia. Any time I laid down I would start coughing and throw-up black stuff (reflux).

No, it's blood. If it is black and looks like coffee grounds it is blood. Besides, anyone who has a Lapband and has symptoms of "reflux" has either a slipped band or a band that is too tight. In any event, you need to see your doctor.

Coughing up what looked like coffee grounds was my first indication I had an ulcer and a bad one at that. Please see your dr. I don't know if an unfill will help an ulcer, but I do know there are some great medications out there. Perhaps an unfill is in order too. I really don't know much about that aspect as I'm not banded yet. Good luck to you.

I had the exact same problem & Dr. Pleatman is right on. It is BLOOD!! The only thing that will stop it is to get an unfill. You will feel so much better.

Good luck to you!!!

Dr. Pleatman, I did have it checked...it was a hiatial hernia and now it is fixed! She may be coughing up blood but mine was reflux and it was bad enough that I would throw-up from it, which also caused me to run a fever of 102 every two to three days. Once the hernia was fixed I have not coughed up any black stuff and no more fevers.

I am considering lap band surgery, this is really rather frightening, if you were me, would you opt out for a personal trainer?

Hi everyone, thank you so much for your advice and good thoughts. Shortly after my last post, I started throwing up red blood, so I went right into the ER. Turns out I have a bad gastrointestinal bug and all the vomiting caused me to rupture a blood vessel in my esophogus. So, yes it was definitely blood, but on the positive side, not band related. I was dehydrated and they kept me in for quite a while giving me fluids and running tests.

Home now, exhausted but better now that I know it is not my band.

Dianamae, even with the scare, I wouldn't trade my band for anything!

That depends dianamae,

Have you ever tried to lose weight with a personal trainer? If so, how did it work out? If not, give it a try first. Lapband surgery will be here if or when you need it - who knows, you might be one of the lucky - or maybe they're just more tenacious than I ever was - ones for whom diet and exercise works.

Rereading I think that may sound like I'm being snotty, but really I'm not. You really MIGHT BE one of the ones the traditional weight loss methods work for.

Good luck on your weight loss journey.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
