pre op required tests

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering what testing you had to have done pre-op. I have a scope (how was that?) , blood work, chest x-ray, gallbladder ultrasound, physical from my pcp. The surgeon said that a stress test was up to my dr.

I am wondering if most have that done?

Thanks!

Diane

My surgeon required a lot of pre-op testing:

Cardiologist clearance letter, EKG, Chest X-Ray, etc.

EGD (found out I had H-Pylori)

Colonoscopy

Mamo report

Pap smear report

DEXA Scan

Psychological Eval

SPLIT sleep Study (found out I had sleep apnea - now on a CPAP machine)

There were lots more listed, but I only needed the ones above.

Best of Luck,

JoAnne

They pick the tests based on your medical history (and, to some extent their philosophy).

I had a cardiac stress test because I told my surgeon that sometimes I get a pain in my shoulder when I exercise. Most people in my surgeon's practice don't get one. Some get a chest x-ray and some an Upper GI. I got the Upper Gi because of suspected hiatal hernia.

But it turns out I really didn't need the stress test. My heart is in great shape. But better safe, than sorry... I did have a hiatal hernia though. It's good to know that ahead of time.

Chest X ray

Tons of blood work

Urine test for nicotine and to see if I was preggers. I got this test like 3 times before surgery.

EKG

Take home EKG pack that tracked my heart rate for 24 hours

Echocardiogram

sleep apnea test

Tests on my lung function, peak flow and such.

Barium swallow

Psych Consult

Nutrition Consult

Oh almost forgot the ultrasound. They looked at everything in my abdomen. Found a cyst on my liver, no big deal but having them poke at it hurt like a.......nevermind.

I also had to go to two classes, one about surgery and one about nutrition.

I would have needed a pap smear but mine was 3 weeks before my consult so I was good to go.

Every single test was worth it. I would do it all over again ten times if needed.

I also had lots of blood work, cardic clearance, edg (found ulcer, hiata hernia and way to much stomach acids, ekg, echo, physic, 3 months of nutrition.

My thought process was the more, the better I'm prepared with what ever problems I can before having surgery.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
