Frustrated and need to vent......

Recommended Posts

Okay guys,

I went in today to complete my preop, everything was going fine, everything at the hospital was soo nice and helpful and everything went great. The preop nurse called me back to her office and told me that 2 of my lab values were slightly elevated. These labs just so happen to be the PT and INR!!!!!!

I have NEVER EVER had a problem with my labs and I am very shocked! I was almost in tears. I know that I have been doing this preop diet thing early and Im sure I have not been getting in my neccessary nutrtion, which PT and INR elevation is sometimes caused by Vitamin K deficiencies.

She told me that one of the PCPs there would assess me and give me some injections. I have no other medical problems by the way.

So the Dr ordered 3 days worth of Vitamin K shots:sad0:. Im a nurse, so I have volunteered to give them to myself.

I am just so frustrated, I dont know what to do. I am suppose to follow up on Monday for my results and to have my blood type and cross match done. So now who knows what my sleeve future is. I am scheduled to have it on 9-15-09. Im sure I could have it at a later date, but there is only so much time off that I have allowed. This really sucks, BIG TIME!

Its not horribly elevated but it should be normal prior to surgery. I have not had any abnormal bleeding or bruising, this is really strange. Since I started my preop diet early, I think I will quit now and try to increase my diet with enriched foods that will help me. Im technically not scheduled to start my preop liquids officially until Friday but I had begin a whole 2 weeks early.....

P.S. I was feeling so excited because when I was in admissions at the hospital the lady told me. "You are so lucky, you are getting the surgery under the old price 12K, because now its 20K as of July 1st" Thankfully, I booked before, so I still qualified for my quoted rate.

If you believe in prayer, please pray for me.:thumbup1:

I'll definitely keep you in my thoughts. I know how frustrating getting bad news on labs can be especially right before surgery. They discovered a funky clotting disorder right before I had surgery, and it was a horrific experience. I hope everything goes well on Monday for you.

What is PT and INR? I have never heard of these in a blood test.

I do believe in prayer and I will pray for you. I totally believe that the Lords' will is going to be done for you here. It is a bummer to have a kink thrown in the works. Hopefully, it will all work out by the 15th, your original date even.

PT/INR measures how quickly your blot clots. If its elevated, which mine is, it takes longer to clot: hence per the labs I have a greater tendency to bleed/bruise. So basically, they dont really like to cut on your without have a close watch on those labs.

I have never in my whole 27 years had anything with ANY of my labs and I just had some drawn about 2-3 months ago. This is sooo strange. Everything was going picture perfect, my blood pressure was even in the low 100s systolic, when its usually around 130.

Thank you so much KayKay! Thanks, I believe it in too and if its GODS will, which I pray and hope that it is, this will all work out. I mean everything has fallen into place so far: the financial means, getting the time off from work, having my short term disability done prior to just in case I have complications, the surgeon, etc.

Thanks in advance for your prayers:biggrin0:

I'm so sorry. I hope they can get this figured out for you. I hope the shots you will give yourself will take care of this for you.

WOW Tiff, lovely new pic/hair cute, its really stylish.

So if you dont mind me asking do you have a tendency to bleed or "throw clots". Did they just place you on medication, etc? Is it all resolved for you now.

Thanks for the words of concern......I am feeling kinda down right now but also in some ways I feel that whatever happens, it will be for the best. Maybe its a defense mechanism? who knows? But I would RATHER have the VSG than to continue to battle obesity for the rest of my life.:cursing:

What is PT and INR? I have never heard of these in a blood test.

PT stands for prothromin time; this measures coagulable or how thin is the blood; it is measured and compared to controls. INR stands for international normalised ratio; it is more sensitive and accurate than PT.

Thank you so very much. I just had my hair done yesterday, and it felt so amazing. I don't mind sharing any details of what I went through with this surgery. Sorry, I'm kind of long-winded. Hopefully, I'll be able to explain the clotting disorder and how they treated it pre-op and during my recovery. I did test negative for von Willebrand disease, and apparently there is no "name" for the clotting disorder. I believe the hematologist finally diagnosed "idipathic clotting disorder". The DDAVP definitely reversed the clotting factors, and my clotting time decreased from 8.5-9 minutes to around 4 minutes.

The hematologist gave me DDAVP the day before surgery, and then the next morning I was given another dose on a drip for 24 hours. I apparently will always have a slow clotting time, and I still have to contact DMV to put a medic alert on my driver's license. I'm not on any permanent medications, but have been warned that if I have surgery, or any other type of procedure, I'll need to make the medical staff is aware of this issue.

I was still given Lovenox injections pre-op and post-op. Apparently, the DDAVP and Lovenox worked together somehow in my body. Of course, I am not a medical professional, and some of the terminilogy and reasons behind all of the injections was kind of confusing. I didn't have any issues with clots.

Im glad everything worked out okay for you. Its weird how we can have things "wrong" with us and not even know it. I have not ever in my life had a nose bleed. I would think that someone with a prolonged PT/INR would have at least that. Im starting to think the test results are a fluke. LOL---really, this is bothersome and Im really worried but like we all say, all we can do is take one day at a time and hope for the best.

Thanks for your kind words and sharing your experience with me.

Thanks Cajun ! ! !

He'll be home in roughly 2 weeks. We're both super excited. Something, I don't think I've shared here is when he left, I weighed around 100 pounds more than him. He's 6ft, and weighed about 163-165. Well, he's gained 25lbs of muscle :sad0:, and now I only weigh 5lbs more than he does. I'm super stoked about him seeing me. He met, fell in love, and married me at my highest weight, so I know he's going to love seeing me 70lbs smaller.

Sorry for the threadjacking Shanda.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
