How long after surgery until you can have caffeine? Also, does Decaf tea count as Water intake?

Yes, decaf tea counts. My doc likes to call them fluids, so people don't get stuck on the idea that it has to be Water. He says any sugar free decaf liquid is considered a Fluid.

My doc also recommends limiting caffeine intake to occasional use, as well. It can dehydrate you, make you thirstier, etc. I've reluctantly decided, since I'm past the withdrawal stage, to give up my morning coffee and switch to decaf. Hopefully my thinner, healthier more active body will make up for the energy I used to get from caffeine. Here's hopin'!

I'm weaning off caffeine now, trying to do it gradually so I don't get a Migraine. I've cut way back by using less coffee grounds, and serving myself half the amount as usual... It's the pits. I am in a grogg when I wake up in the morning, for several hours! The brain on empty....duhhh

I started back on coffee when I started on mushies; however, like everything else, it just doesn't taste the same - I end up drinking maybe 1/4 of a cup. I've been switching to tea, as it seems to taste better than coffee these days. I also drink iced tea every now and again. I don't have any headaches since I don't drink it on a regular basis anymore.

Have you ever heard of using chicory in your coffee? It might help you to reduce the amount of coffee you're using per pot, without settling for a weak cup of coffee. It's looks a lot like ground coffee, and the people in New Orleans have been using it as a coffee "extender" since the civil war. It looks really dark, but the flavor is actually a tiny bit sweet and caramel-y. Best of all, it tastes like a full bodied cup of coffee, but less caffeine. The ratio to start is 3 coffee to 1 chicory. But I've heard of people drinking 100% chicory instead of Decaf.< /p>

I get mine at Communitycoffee.com, but I have also seen it in my local gourmet grocery. Or if you're in the south, you'll probably have no trouble finding it, or New Orleans blend coffees with chicory. BTW...Community also has fantastic decaf blends that really do taste as good as their regular.

(Can you tell I really miss living near New Orleans?)

WAIT! I just realized I'm quoting "cajun". You probably know all about this, then. I'll leave it, anyway, in case someone else can use the info. :biggrin0:

I quite coffee about a year prior to surgery- no paticular reason- just did.

Was glad 'cause my doc doesn't like you to drink it. But I had a full canister in my fridge and started drinking it again.... adding my morning Protein to it.

When I went for my 6 month check up I asked him again why no caffine and he said it does not count towards your Fluid intake, and it's a stimulant which could cause you to want to eat or "graze'.....and I might wwant to agree with him... I have noticed that I do want to eat more and now that I finished the coffee that i had, am switching to decafe. I just got tired of having cold Protein Shakes in the morning and adding my protein to my coffee was a nice diffence.

My surgeon is also not keen on caffeine intake. He feels it contributes to grazing.

I quit caffeine several months before my consultation. I am getting more and more sensitive to it the older i get. I got a huge heart pounding rush from a cup of coffee and then crashed if I didn't drink more. Also with high blood pressure I had no business IMHO drinking something that raises my blood pressure.

I went through withdrawls, they were not anywhere close to withdrawing from ciggys. The nice thing about not drinking caffeine on a regular basis is if I need to be up later and wide awake I can drink a half cup and be good to go.

I have stopped using caffeine in the past. Did it by gradually adding more Decaf and decreasing the caffenated grounds. Keeps the full flavor and allows adjutment time. I used columbian for both to keep the flavor consistent.

Well, I have never been a coffee drinker, and I haven't ever had problems with feeling like I NEEDED caffeine. I was out and about most of the day yesterday, and my sister wanted to get something to drink. We stopped at chick-fil-a and I got an unsweet tea, but it wasn't Decaf. I was hoping it wouldn't mess me up! It was the first caffeine I'd had since surgery!

I did not stop drinking my single morning cup of coffee. I hate drinking tea; its taste is completely different!

I find it interesting that weight loss people say caffeine is an appetite stimulant but sports nutrition people say it depresses the appetite. I am trying to find out why they both say what they say so I can figure out which group I think is right. :lol0:

Well, I will say that my ONE single experience with caffeine post-surgery was great. I was so thrilled with my iced tea that I could have cared less about food. :) hahaha....that's my case study in a nutshell ;-)

Also, I know I've been whining an awful lot the past few weeks about the scale being stuck, but this week it moved 4 pounds down. :-)

I'm not sure if caffeine is an appetite stimulant or depressant, but I am sure that is dehydrating!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
