8 Weeks Out From Gastric Sleeve Surgery And Wishing I Could Turn Back Time

Recommended Posts

Not sure if this is the right section for this thread, but it sounded right.

Just having a whinge, and I am surrprised its taken me this long.

I am 8 weeks out from surgery tomorrow, and I feel shite. I can't eat anything, and if I do its tiny tiny amounts. I hear "read" people talking about eating a saucer of food. I am lucky if I can eat 2 or 3 teaspoons. I am vomitting most days, no reason, just feel sick, and up it comes.

I can drink fine, but food is a real issue. Surely my body can't survive on such little food. For example, yesterday I had a couple of sips of a hot choc, 1 cracker with vegimite and a sip of Soup. I can't seem to find any information on why I feel a blockage in my throat. I think this blockage is whats causing me to be sick. Its like when you poke your finger down your throat and you need to retch, like its just sitting there ready to make me spew!

Food is such a huge part of your life and every single meal is affected by how I feel. We don't go out any where because I can't eat anything. I haven't got the energy just to cruise the shops.

I have lost 20kg but I worry about it coming back when eventually I start to eat.

**Little gap there where I went to be sick**

I am just so over it, and soemdays find myself wishing I had never done this to myself. :lol0:

What you're experiencing is not normal and you should definitely see your surgeon to have the problem evaluated. An esophagram or an endoscopy would rule out whether or not you have a stricture.

I agree with Elisabeth, it isn't normal.

I will add one more thing, when we have this surgery we are so shocked at the small quantities of food we can eat that we do tend to over eat. I have experienced something when I over eat, I can feel the food in my esophagus, it is as though I am using my esophagus as an extended stomach and this is something we most certainly can do! You can actually dilate your esophagus this way.

Until you can get some diagnostics done I would suggest just eating 2 teaspoons of food every hour or so. Or every 30 minutes. Are you getting Protein supplements in? How much Protein are you getting? Are you measuring? You should shoot for at least 60gms for the time being.

I am definitely not over eating. And I am fairly certain that I am not getting the required Protein. My surgeon has been less than helpful post surgery, I was admitted with dehydration and he treeated me like I was stupid, so I really hate to go see him if I don't need to, I guess I just need to bite the bullet and do it.

Please do not delay in getting yourself help. If Dr makes you feel bad address it with him. You have a right to treatment and a right to feel like you are being treated humanely. I hope you feel better soon.

I thought you went and saw him and he found something in your throat.

Yep I did see him, I had an endoscopy and they cleaned out food that was stuck in my throat.

So HERE is where you posted ... I knew both of us weren't losing our minds!

What is a stricture?

It's scar tissue. When it's somewhere that interferes with food going down, it's called a stricture. Usually, they expand the tissue and you are fine. Sometime you have to go back and have it expanded a few times before it goes away.

That does not sound like any fun whatsoever.

Well, no complications are fun. But this one is much better than a leak. It's probably worse than my kidney stone though because it generally goes on for a while before you realize what the problem is. Though having a kidney stone feels like you are trying to pass a baby through your urethra so it wasn't particular fun at the time. Just relatively short.

Lib,

Has your surgeon prescribed a PPI such as Nexium or Prilosec? If not, and if you have reflux (GERD), you can get a stricture from constant acid in your esophagus. It causes a feeling of something stuck in the throat. You may need a modified barium swallow to see how your esophagus works when you swallow. Talk with your surgeon.

Don't let your concerns be disregarded...Don't let yourself become invisible and try to just "grin and bear it"...that 's what many of us do as obese persons, because we feel "less than" our thin counterparts. You had the courage to turn the corner and choose a new life for yourself, so keep moving forward. Assert your right to get good follow-up medical care for your complications. You deserve it. I know you will succeed and soon be feeling better!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
