new addition to lap band surgery to reduce hunger?

Recommended Posts

Has anyone heard that some docs are adding another "step" to the lap band surgery?...they are cutting "something?" to reduce hunger....just cutious.

I was banded 12-19-06 and have had major problems with first bite pain...just this week it has gotten better and I can eat BUT I am hungry ALL the time. I'm afraid to get another fill next week at the docs because I don't want to go back to first bite pain BUT I think I need a fill to help with hunger!

Thanks for comments!

Wendy

I just got an update and the docs here are experimenting with cutting a nerve to help control hunger....anyone heard of this???????

I am just mastering first bite pain and am scared to get a fill worried that it might trigger what I have been experienceing the past 5 months but I am HUNGRY ALL THE TIME!

any thoughts????????????????

Hungry all the time? Are you getting in the required amount of calories and eating 3 meals a day? Are you getting in foods high in Fiber and drinking plenty of Water? Have you distinguished "physical" hunger from "emotional" hunger? Are you losing weight?

If you've been having trouble for 5 months, you should speak with your MD and maybe have an EGD scheduled to make sure everything is OK. I have not heard anything about cutting nerves for hunger reduction.

Cutting a nerve to control hunger??? I never head of it... seems odd, I dont know.

Seems like I am hungry all the time too... but I only eat when I am bored. I am in the process of getting my band replaced so I have no restriction. So I know how it is to be hungry all the time.

I would imagine that is the vagus nerve.. That nerve is frequently cut durring Gastric Bypass surgery as well to help with hunger.. It is also cut in people with severe peptic ulcer disease to help with pain. Im not sure, but I believe the nerve can regenerate itself and it would only be a temporary fix.. Like i said im not sure about that part but i bet an internet search would tell you.

The vagus nerve has other functions too such as controlling heart rate, peristalsis, sweating, smooth muscle function, I cant imagine you'd want it cut unless the circumstances were dire. Its one of the most important nerves in the body.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
