Anyone try 5 Day Pouch diet?

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I was wondering if anyone has tried that 5 day pouch diet? Can it work for us? I had the plicated band surgery almost two years ago. I lost 50 lbs pretty quickly and then it was as if my body got wind of what was happening and said, 'hey- no more!' I plateaued for months but then started to slowly gain 12 pounds back and I am panicking. I have had two fills since my surgery and feel comfortable with the band tightness..any tighter and I feel like everything and it's uncle gets stuck! I RAN my first 5k this weekend and feel great, but ..I need to 'reboot my system' ..so to speak! Saw something about that 5 day thing and thought maybe that would help?

I haven't done that diet, but know several people who tried it and found that it helped curtail some bad food habits they'd acquired, like too much sweet stuff. And since in theory it can cause quick weight loss, a pound or two lost (don't know if that's realistic in 5 days, though) might give you back some self-confidence that you can in fact succeed. I guess it depends on what's behind the 12 lbs you gained - poor food choices? not enough Portion Control? grazing? or what? If you can get some insight into the causes(s) of the gain, you can work on that as well as work on getting back on the bandwagon. Good luck!

Thank you! YES, when I said reboot my system, I definitely meant curtailing some bad habits as well..why is it that those bad habits are so hard to break? I thought I had them under control. Ugh. Being honest with myself has to be key if I am really going to be successful in my weight loss! I know. I guess I just need something to get me jump started and thought maybe trying this would help. Thanks for advising!

I've never done the 5 day pouch test, but when I get a fill the schedule I follow afterward is very similar to it.

I find that when I go on that graduated diet again, from liquids back to solids, it does indeed "reset" my eating habits and brain. I'm not even entirely sure why, but it seems like it really helps curb my cravings and desire to graze. It puts my head back into the game (so to speak) and I find that by the time I'm back on solids I'm a very good place.

I say go for it- it's worth a try!

What you said is EXACTLY what I hope will happen. Thank you so much for sharing that!

My post fill diet is also pretty close to the 5 day pouch test and since I'm only 10 wks post op I have not needed the pouch test.

This is my post fill diet:

ONLY liquids & Protein shakes for 3 days

ONLY soft food for 2 more days

Day 6 and later, 4-6 oz portion meals

One minute per bite!

I did pass the 5 day pouch test to a friend who had hit a plateau. She said it really helped but the first 2 days were very hard. It actually took her more than one try to actually get thru liquid phase.

I also encouraged her to keep a food diary a few days prior to starting the pouch test and she was shocked at how many calories she was consuming; so you may also want to track your food.

----good luck

I do it every 4-6 weeks as routine maintenance...I don't consider it a diet,i or a means to loose additional weight ...nor do I follow the regime someone came up with as to what stages of food to eat and when....

I will simply go all liquids, Soups and shakes, etc....staying away from solid foods for at least 2 days, sometimes 3...giving the band a good rest, until I can feel everything getting back to my "New Normal" and in optimum working order which it always does from this simple procedure.

I just wanted to Thank you all for your advice and your experiences regarding the 5 day pouch test. This being day 5, I feel refreshed! Days 1 & 2 were more difficult than I thought they'd be having to only eat/drink liquids. That really let me know how far I had veered off course. Also, I realized I needed to make a conscious effort to NOT drink 30 minutes before and after eating. These two things alone made this test worth doing!

I just did a plain ole 5 day liquid diet (with 1 cup of cottage cheese per day) I was trying to avoid the "headache" issues when not eating- yes it worked quite well with the Protein Shakes during the day......lost 7 lbs which got the weight off that I gained and yes I do believe it "reset" my pouch also. Since then have lost a couple more lbs. Also had a small fill after so that may be helping me too. I am hitting my year mark and "finally" starting to feel a little something after my last fill- I mean a Little! It has been a very frustrating year waiting for some help from my band but hopefully it will start helping finally with getting some more weight off. Has been dreadfully hard to lose to this point but am very hopeful for the next year to have some help from my band :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
