Insurance Exclusion \ exception Question

Recommended Posts

I have bcbs insurance and my policy language specifically excludes weight loss surgery. I am wondering if anyone else has had this and if they have had any luck getting it covered by having the doctor submit a letter of medical necessity? Should I even try to fight that battle and wsste that many months or should I just start to find ways to pay for it myself.

Typically if it's specifically excluded the insurance company won't budge. But who knows...maybe you'll get lucky. I guess it woudn't hurt to try, but I would be surprised if they change their exclusion policy. I would have a back-up plan in place if you're seriously considering WLS. Good luck!! :)

My policy had that clause also and the center said I would have a very slim chance of fighting it. I ended up self pay but was lucky enough to have a 401K at work that allows you to take a loan against your balance. The interest paid goes back into your fund minus a very small administrative fee. I was able to apply and had funds in my hands is less than a week. For me it sure beat the 6 month study by the insurance company where they might bail on coverage anyway. I figure I will be 9 months ahead of the weight lose curve going that path.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
