Anyone have a fish bone stuck?

Recommended Posts

I had this happen 2 days ago. I was eating baked fish filets that my uncle had fileted with a electric knife. Before I knew it, I had swallowed a tiny little bone. I can't do bread, so that was not gonna be the answer! Lonnie told me to drink a little vinegar (old wive's tale that may work - I don't know). I did & 30 minutes later I hurled (straight vinegar is not good for my banded tummy). The good thing is that the bone came up. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this experience? I have been on liquids & mushies since that episode. I really baby my band!

I wont eat fish with bones at the best of times. I like fish but I'm really squeamish about it - Doug has a passion for fishing but I will not touch, look at or cook anything he brings home, I cant stand handling it. Yuck. And if he cooks it I wont eat it because of the bones, nor will the kids. If he wants us to eat it he better bloody learn to fillet it properly then.

I buy it from the fish shop already cleaned up and nice to eat, lol. I toss what he's caught out and go and buy the same thing properly prepared and lie about it, tell him it's his fish.

So no, I"ve never had a fishbone stuck but the thought has occurred to me how bad this could be for a bnaded person.

LOL! Jacqui, that is hilarious!!! It really was the most scarey thing I have had happen to me so far. I don't think I will be eating fish again for a very long time!

Wow. I've never had a fishbone stuck, pre or post band. I can't even imagine.

Jacqui, maybe if you tell your husband what you do with his fish, he'll learn how to filet them? It's not that hard to do, and fresh fish is so yummy. :Banane13:

my dad got a fish bone from salmon stuck in his windpipe once. he had to go to the hospital to have it removed. It was funny at the time, and looking back, cause he sounded like a cat hacking up a hairball. HUCK HUCK ACK!

hehehehe

I am sorry you went through it though. I do not mean to make light. It does happen. I had it happen, but it was close enough to the top where DH could pull it out with a pair of tweezers. We try to clean all the bones out of the fish, but when they are as thin as whiskers and clear, you miss a few sometimes. Interesting about the vinegar. I guess it did work! LOL

Well, yeah, I guess it did! LOL!! When we were kids, a bunch of neighborhood families would get together & have fish fries. Someone always got a bone stuck (usually me). All I had to do was eat a piece of bread & it would push it on down. But I can't do bread now!!!! Oh well! You live & you learn!

Every summer as a kid we went camping at a reservoir just north of us, and we ate the fish they caught. But they always kept a bottle of that Real Lemon lemon juice out, and they said it would disolve the bone if you swallowed it. Now I never had it happen, nor do I ever remember seeing anyone drink it....but I remember it ALWAYS being there!

ewwwwwwww! I don't know what would be worse, the vinegar or lemon juice! The vinegar was horrible though!!! I don't want to have to repeat that anytime soon! LOL!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
