Now I get Hiccups all the time!

Recommended Posts

I got my band and a hernia repair as well as the removal of a lot of scar tissue July 24th. The funniest thing has happened I get hiccups quite often since than. I find it rather odd, I rarely got them before, but I can surely live with them. Told my daughter I feel like a little baby I get them so often! But on the bright side they do not last very long.

The hiccups may be your body's way of telling you it's time to stop eating. My signal to stop is several violent sneezes! Makes me feel a bit like Typhoid Mary when I'm out in public.

The hiccups are my signal to stop eating.. It doesn't happen that often but now and again if I eat too fast they happen.. try slowing down.. You should still be on liquids at 1 week post op so perhaps try drinking slower and perhaps hot beverages...

I also get hiccups if I eat something that has hard time going down. Best example is the banana, if I forget to chew it well I get hiccups after 2 bites :)

I just figured it was because I was full. Still on liquids only, yogurt is the closest thing to being food I get! And I eat vanilla, orange or lime so no lumps. But good to know, thanks for the advise!

Yes I am still on liquids for another week in fact. I do sip an ounce of Water every 15 minutes as they suggested, but I may be drinking too much water. Thank you!

Hiccups and burps are a sign I need to slow down or stop eating. After you start eating and have been with the band a while, you will realize how helpful burps are. At first, when I eat too much and felt I was going to be sick, I would just let it come up. But now that I know my stomach, I can burp and burp and somehow the food passes just fine. My BF already knows the signs too...lol

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
