Dreading, any suggestions

Recommended Posts

I have to have a colonoscopy next Friday and my lap band surgeon who is a gen. surgeon also is going to do it, anyway, I am so dreading it, not the procedure, the prep! He has me drinking 2 bottles of mag. citrate, yuck, I mean I gag on the stuff like that. I litterally have a hard time drinking stuff like that, even brushing my teeth gags me and sometimes I throw up doing that, my gag reflex is sensitive. Plus 4 tabs of Dulcolax. Can anyone suggest how to make the mag citrate go down any easier? Also what flavors does it come in, all I know is lemon and I can't have any red or grape. And I thought a 2 week pre op diet was bad, huh, this will suck. This will be my 3rd one.

Oh god, there just is no way around this. So if you can ignore the fact that some ppl are hypercritical about using straws, my suggestion is to use one. If you can bypass most of your tongue it does help to minimize the flavor. It will taste like crap regardless, but it may help. Pinch your nose while drinking it may help as well. Perhaps have a really strong odor in the room (like coffee) as a distractor as well). It's all about sensation overload or minimization after all lol.

I have no clue what flavors they come in, not like any of them is enjoyable ahhaha.

Sorry that you have to go through it all (I wish they would just give us gtubes and tube feed us for these procedures personally lol)

I use straws on a daily basis; without issue. If that is going to help, do it!

When I'm prepping for that procedure, I make sure and have a glass of apple juice (or whatever you like) to take a few sips immediately after I drink the prep; have it in my other hand to quickly wash down the taste and sensation of the prep. For me, that really helps to avoid the gag reflex, because the apple juice tastes great. It's a treat, because I never drink juice :)

Good luck.

They have a wild cherry flavor some places. It's not as bad as the lemon. If you can guzzle it i would!! Or ask your doctor about a pill you can take instead. There are alternatives to drinking that stuff. Good luck!

For my colonoscopy they had me take the ducolax tablets and I also had to mix a bottle of mirilax into 2 bottles of Gatorade. Though you avoid the reds, orange and purple, you still have somewhat of a choice on flavors. Maybe see if you can do that instead?

thanks for all the suggestions they are all good. My surgeon does the mag citrate and dulcolax pills so that I don't have to do the big jugs of gatorade because the last time I did that I threw it all up. I will give the apple juice a try after each swallow and a straw indeed. Thank you all so very much.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
