Gastro Dr. saw no restriction

Recommended Posts

I am feeling very overwhelmed. My last fill was pretty tight and I lost about 6 lbs the first week. After the first two or so weeks my restriction lessened quite a bit. My problem is, I ended up having SEVERE GERD. Just swallowing Water burned. So I went to a Gastro Dr. and he did an Endoscopy. Thankfully my results came back normal, but he was quite concerned because he saw no evidence of me having any restriction. He said he knows I am banded only because I told him so. He wants me to go back to my surgeon because he is worried that I may have a leak. I have an appt. next week with my surgeon.

So my question is, does anyone know any information on Lapband leaks? I paid out of pocket for this and there is no way I can afford to pay for it again. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A leak would mean your band has emptied and GERD doesn't sound like a symptom of an empty band? A band that is too full would indicate reflux.

I agree with TMF.

First, a gastro doctor knows absolutely nothing about a Lap band. A lot of well meaning gastros and radiologists often try to diagnose band problems but fail miserably. The only person qualified to deal with band issues is a bariatric surgeon.

Also, as TMF said, the fact you have severe GERD is a sign of a band too tight not a band too loose.

Talk to your bariatric doctor and let him check your band Fluid and tightness.

Best wishes.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
